From America – Study at the University of Saint Joseph #5
The beautiful sunshine comes again on Monday mornning. Here at the University of Saint Joseph, the weather is perfect with a lovely cool summer breeze coming. The landmark of USJ, McDonough Hall is shining against the clear blue sky in the morning. Breakfast at the university cafeteria makes us feel like being American students. They enjoyed their own choice.
Today's main program was Otsuma Nakano students' presentations on "Cool Tokyo." At the special lecture room of McDonough, each student made presentation to introdue Tokyo cool spots. The audience is Dr. Dorothy Keller, Ph.D in art, Professor Katheleen Mullin, a criminal laywer and professor on American history and constitution, and some staff of the University of Saint Joseph. Each of them gave it best try to introduce many famous spots and tourists' destination areas with their PPTs.
Some of the students highlighted "anime" as the coolest attraction and modern culture of Japan, so a professor asked our students why Japanese anime catches attentions from all over the world and what is the difference between American comics and Japanese anime. USJ students and Otsuma Nakano students discussed the answers to these questions, which became very interesting presentation and discussions in the end.
Finally, Dr. Dorothy Keller wrapped up today's session as advising us as follows: "Comparing different cultures is very crucial for young students like you to get over ethnocentrism and aquire complicated and multiple insights into the world."
月曜日の朝、快晴。本当にきれいな青空が、大学のキャンパスの緑とマッチしています。その中で、このセントジョセフ大学のランドマーク、マクドノーホールが美しく美しく輝いています。そのキャンパスの一角にあるカフェテリアで朝食をとります。アメリカの大学生の気分を味わいながら。
今日のメインプログラムは、本校生徒による"クール東京”のプレゼンテーション。そのマクドノーホールの講義室で、大学の先生方（美術博士のケラー教授、弁護士でもあり、この大学のアメリカ史と憲法学の教授であるムリン教授など）とUSJの学生を前にしてのプレゼンテーションです。それぞれで準備しておいたパワーポイントで、東京のクールスポットについてプレゼンテーションを行いました。
多くの生徒がアニメについて紹介をしました。それについて、大学の先生方から、なぜ日本のアニメはこれほど世界中から注目を集めるのか、アメリカの漫画との違いはどこにあるのか、などの質問がありました。その質問をきっかけに、USJの学生と大妻中野の生徒とのやり取りに。とても興味深い話し合いに発展しました。
最後に締めくくりとして、ケラー教授からのアドバイスです。「このように自分の文化を、他の文化圏に行って、説明することは、あなた方のような若い人達にとっては、決定的に重要です。それによって、自国文化を相対的に捉えることができるようになり、複眼的に世界を見ることできるようになります。」やはり、大学の先生方のメッセージはプロフェッショナルでアカデミックです。
