From New Zealand – One Year Exchange Program at New Plymouth_170816

Two weeks study abroad program is gone.  But in New Zealand, one year study abroad program is still going on!   Wako Miyazawa, who has been studying at New Plymouth Girls High School, updates her report on the school life there.

Hi. I’m Wako. I am so happy to share my recent life here in NZ.   Here it is not so cold, but it is getting warmer and warmer. Unfortunately, it rains a lot.

During the last weekend, I went to Hamilton, which takes 3 hours’ drive from my home.  I went there with my host family because my host dad wanted to buy a caravan. I am sure it will be nice if you have them here because in summer, most people go to beach and camping.  Also, my host family loves to travel.  At Hamilton, we went to many places by car. I’ve never seen caravans before, so I was excited.

In Japan, such camping cars or caravans are not so popular and not so many people buy them, but in here, they seem to be very popular and, in fact, many people have them.  The roads are very wide, so I think this is a good place for the first drivers to practice their driving.

And from now, I’ll talk about my school life.  Term3 had started about 2 weeks ago. And for me, I am having much more fun than the school life of the term 2．This is quite obvious because I have more international and kiwi friends than the term2. Yes, I am really enjoying my school life in NZ. I was not a friendly and talkative person.  But before the term 3 starts, I had just been considering of myself and wondering if I would have to change or not. And then I noticed that I would have to change myself, because otherwise, this study abroad can’t be good. I wrote down my problems and the things I need to change, and I tried to overcome or make them better.  It worked! 

I am sure I can become much friendlier and even though it is not perfect, I can express myself and my opinions.  But to be honest, I cannot recognize that my English is improving or not. I cannot feel it myself. But I think this means that I can do more in NZ. And I have to do it.

Ok, next! Sorry I have many things to talk about.  Last week was an assessment week. I took math, geography, science assessment.   I really hate assessment. Is there anyone who likes or loves assessment there?   I don’t think so.  But anyway I finally finished my long assessment week! I am so happy now.  

We have two types of assessment. One is open-book and one is not.  Open-book is the tests that you can bring your notebook or laptop or textbook to the assessments if you want.   This is nice for me because this also means you can use your translator! 

The assessment time is depending on the subject. For example, I am taking geography and it took 4 classes however math and science were only1 class. (1 class=1 hour) I think I did quite well on geography and math, but not science. But isn’t it wonderful that I understand the whole sentences in English? I hope I get good scores. Yeah, oh and sorry, I forgot to write about the open-book subjects.  They were all open-book assessments except geography.

And lastly, I want to finish my report with a funny story.  I have 3 friends called Amanda. And they are all from Taiwan or China. I don’t know why, but there are many Amandas in here. My host mom said she knows at least 5 Amandas who are from Taiwan or China.  And when we were talking about that, she said, “All the girls who come from Taiwan or China are called Amanda. So you ‘d better figure it out they are Amanda or not.”  And we talked at dinner table and I was about to spill out. And we laughed and laughed.  Funny isn’t it? But all Amandas are nice in fact.

皆さんこんにちは 宮澤和子です！ここ、ニュージーランドでは今は冬です。 でも次第に暖かくなって来ています。 でも沢山雨が降ります。これから、わたしの最新の留学生活をレポートしたいと思います。

先週、私はホストファミリーと一緒にハミルトンに行きました ハミルトンはここニュープリマスから車で3時間ほどのところにあります。私のホストファザーがキャラバンを買おうかどうか迷っていたので行きました。ニュープリマスでは夏になると皆キャンピングやビーチに行くそうです。ですから、もしキャラバンがあったらもっと楽しくなります！

私のホストファミリーは色々なところに行くのが大好きです。 ハミルトンでは沢山のキャラバンを見るため、色々なところに行きました。私は一度もキャラバンを見たことがなかったので楽しみにしていました。日本ではキャンピングカーやキャラバンはそこまで人気ではありませんが、ニュージーランドではとても人気だそうです。 私も実際色々な所で目にします。

ここからは私の学校生活について書こうと思います。

2週間ほど前にターム3が始まりました。そして私はターム2よりもっともっと楽しんでいます。その理由ははっきりしていて、キウイ&インターナショナルの友達が増えたからです。ですから、すごく楽しんで毎日学校に通っています。 私自身は、おしゃべりだったり、特別フレンドリーではありませんでした。 でも、ターム3が始まる前に変わらなくていいのか自分の中で考えていました。それで気づいたんです。 変わるべきかを考えるのではなく、変わらなければならないことに。でないとこの留学生活が無駄になってしまう。 だから私は自分の問題点、やらなければいけない事などを紙に書き出し、それらを変えたり、よりよくできるように努力しました。 それで、うまくいきました！

私は前よりはフレンドリーになったと思うし、自分の意見も全てではないけれど主張できるようになりました。でも、正直まだ英語が劇的に伸びたという実感はありません。 自分では分からないのです。でも、これらは私にニュージーランドでもっともっとやれる事があると教えてくれます。だから、やらなければいけません。

はい、次！ ごめんなさい、今回は話したい事が沢山あります。先週はテスト週間でした 私は数学、地理、理科のアセスメントをしました。私はアセスメントが大嫌いです。 誰かアセスメント好きな人はいますか？そうは思いません でもとにかく長い1週間が終わり、今はとっても嬉しいです。

テストには大きく分けて2種類あります。オープンブックのテストとそうでないテストです。オープンブックのテストとはもし必要であればノート、パソコン、教科書などを持ち込み可能というテストです。これは私にとってすごく優しいテストでなぜかというと辞書も持ち込み可能、つまり翻訳機も持ち込み可能だからです！

アセスメントの時間は教科書によって大きく異なります。私の場合、地理のテストは4時間、それ以外は1時間でした。私はこのテスト地理と数学は前より出来た自信があります。 でも理科は…

でも全ての質問の意味を、英語で理解出来た事だけで嬉しかったです 良い点数が取れるといいな。（地理以外はオープンブックのテストでした）

そして、最後にちょっと面白い話でこのレポートを終わりにしたいと思います。私の友達で3人のアマンダがいます。そして全員中国または台湾出身です。なぜそんなに沢山のアマンダがいるのか分かりません。私のホストマザーは5人の中国または台湾から来たアマンダを知っていると言っていました。この話をしていた時、ホストマザーが「中国または台湾から来た子は皆んなアマンダって言うのよ。だからもし新しい子がクラスに来て中国か台湾からきたら、アマンダかどうか1番最初に聞いたほうがいいわよ」と言い、その時はちょうど夕ご飯を食べていた時だったので、私は吹き出しそうになってしまいました。でも、私の友達のアマンダ3人とも優しいです。
