Now a report from a new exchange student at Sacred Heart Girls’ College, Mayuko Uchida, reached us to share with you! Here we go. Enjoy!

Hello everyone! I’m Mayuko Uchida. I’m an exchange student of Sacred Heart Girls College here in New Zealand.  2 weeks have passed since I came to New Zealand.  So far, I have had lots of experiences in these 2 weeks. Today, I would like to talk what impressed me here.

First, I was impressed with supermarkets in New Zealand.  Now a new rule is taking effect for supermarkets in New Zealand.  According to the rule, we have to bring own shopping bag to our supermarket to reduce plastic rubbish. I think it’s a good idea. Of course, Japan has a similar rule. But I think the rule do not get through completely in Japan. But here in New Zealand, I was surprised to go to the supermarket because everyone was bringing their own shopping bag!!  I think, Japanese should learn it from New Zealanders.

What also surprised me was that some supermarkets have free fruits for kids. There are some bananas, apples, carrots there. So, any children are able to eat them in supermarket.

Second, I would like to talk about my school friends. I have two friends in my class. They are interested in Japan, so I’m teaching lots of Japanese culture every day.  One day, one of my friends asked me “I wonder why my name is written in only 3 letters Japanese katakana.  In English it’s more?”  At first, I have no idea about how to answer it. But I was able to teach it until my friend understands it and also I found what kind of aspects in Japanese language would make foreigners have questions about.

Finally, I would like to say thank you for all of my supporters, my host family and friends.  For your help, I am here now, so I am keen to spend these special days here in New Zealand meaningfully.

こんにちは。セイクリッドハートガールズカレッジに留学中の内田真柚子です。私がニュージーランドに来て2週間が経ちますが、私はこの2週間で沢山の事を経験しました。今日はその中でも印象に残ったものを紹介しようと思います。

最初にニュージーランドのスーパーマーケットについて紹介しようと思います。ニュージーランドのスーパーでは新しいルールができました。それはプラスチックゴミを減らす為に必ず自分のショッピングバッグを持参するというものです。もちろん日本にもそのようなルールはありますがまだ徹底されているようには感じません。ですが私はスーパーに行って驚きました。ビニール袋が売られているのにもかかわらずほとんどの人が袋を持参しているのです。私はそれをみて日本人も見習うべきだと思いました。

また、いくつかのスーパーでは子供に無料で果物などを提供しています。その中にはりんごやバナナ、にんじんなどがあります。なのでスーパーに行くと子供はみんな果物を食べています。

次に私の学校の友達の話をしようと思います。私には選択科目以外クラスが一緒の友達が2人います。その2人はすごく日本に興味を持ってくれて毎日色々な日本の文化を2人に教えています。ある日1人の友達からこんな質問を受けました。

「なんで私の名前はアルファベットだと5文字なのにどうしてカタカナだと3文字なの？」と、

私は最初回答に困りましたが、なんとか納得のいくまで教えられました。と同時に外国人の方が日本語のどのような点に疑問を持つのか私も勉強したように感じました。

最後に、今私が留学出来ているのは沢山の人の支えがあるからであり、今とても楽しい生活を送れるのは大好きなホストファミリーと友達のおかげです。沢山の人に感謝して、残り約2ヶ月、1日1日を大切に少しでも成長できたらいいなと思います。
