Inglewood High School is a new school we have relationship with in New Zealand. This school is a public co-ed high school with very comfortable sized number of the student enrollment.  Ayaka Ohno, a new exchange student, kicked off her exchange life there at Inglewood HS.  Here we go!

本校はこの2019年のterm1 から新しいニュージーランドの学校と留学提携しました。イングルウッド・ハイハイスクールという公立の男女共学で、生徒同士が皆仲良くなれるちょうどいいサイズの学校です。Ayakaさんがこの学校での留学生のパイオニア。彼女のレポートです。

Hello, everyone! I’m Ayaka Ohno, an exchange student studying at Inglewood High School (IHS) in Inglewood, New Zealand.  Inglewood is blessed with beautiful nature, and we can see Mt. Taranaki, which is very similar to Mt. Fuji. We can also go to New Plymouth, a town about fifteen minutes by car, so I think Inglewood is a very comfortable and good place to live in.

Now in this report, I would like to focus on what surprised me in my school life in Inglewood High School IHS. Firstly, we have different classrooms for different subjects.  It means that, unlike Japan, we don’t take multiple subjects in one classroom, so our room numbers are written in our timetable.

A second difference is that teachers always teach making use of the internet, so most students have either their own computer or smartphone. At Otsuma Nakano High School, we use our own tablet in classes, but I am surprised that here we are allowed to use our own device to access the internet freely.

Finally, regarding school events, we had sports day on Friday 1, February.  We were allowed to wear impressive costume and put color painting on the face relating to our whanau(house) color, which I think it would be very good idea in terms of the sense of being involved with our own team.  My color is white, so I did white color painting. Also, what more surprised me was that it was not decided who should participate in which game to play beforehand, so all of the team moved on to the location of the next game. At the end, each student picked up one piece of rubbish there one by one. I was very surprised at all of this day.

I have found a lot of differences between Japan and New Zealand since I arrived and started at IHS. I think it is important to actively try out everything in experiencing a different culture.

皆さん、こんにちは！ニュージーランドのイングルウッドという町にあるInglewood High Schoolに留学している大野彩夏です。イングルウッドは自然豊かで、タラナキ山という富士山に似た山を見ることが出来ます。また、都市であるニュープリマスへは、車で15分程で行けるため、とても住みやすい町であり、良い場所だと思います。

今回、私がInglewood High Schoolに通う中で驚いた事を話そうと思います。初めにそれぞれの教科によりそれぞれの部屋があるということです。つまり、日本とは異なり、1つの教室で色々な種類の授業を受けないということです。なので、それぞれの授業の部屋番号が時間割に書かれています。

次に、先生方はたいてい、インターネットを使って授業を行います。ですから、ほとんどの生徒がパソコンやスマートフォンを持っています。大妻中野高校ではタブレットを使いますが、インターネットに接続できる自分の機器を使って良いということに驚きました。

最後に、学校行事についてです。2月1日、金曜日にスポーツデイがありました。私達はそれぞれの色にちなんだコスチュームを着たり、フェイスペイントをしたりできます。私は白色だったので、良い機会だと思い、白色のフェイスペイントをしました。また、誰が何の競技をするのか決められていないため、それぞれのチームが、次の競技が行われる場所へ移動します。スポーツデイの最後に全ての生徒が1人1つずつゴミ拾いをしました。この日は本当に驚くことばかりでした。

私はニュージーランドに来て、Inglewood High Schoolに通ってからニュージーランドと日本の違いをたくさん感じています。また、文化の違いを経験しながらすべてのことに積極的に取り組むことが大切だと思っています。
