Times flies so quickly… The final report from Fuka, a Term 1 exchange student at St. Andrew’s Catholic College there in Cairns, Australia, reached us to share her experiences about her Aussie life and Japanese event.

Good day mate!  I am Fuka Ejiri, an exchange student studying here at St Andrews Catholic College in Cairns, Australia.  It’s sad to say that this will be my last report for my study abroad life… I’m already in week 7 now, and only 3 weeks to go! In this report, I would like to write about my weekend, a Japanese festival that I went to and shopping at Cairns Central.

First, I went to a festival called Japan Day of Hope 2019. In this event, people in Japanese community that live in Cairns get together and raise money to support the Fukushima children and the victims of The Great East Japan Earthquake. I didn’t know this event until my friend from school told me about it and invited me to join.  But in the last minute, she could not go with me, so I went with my host sisters instead. The festival was held at a school called Edge Hill State School, and it is one of the schools that students from Prep to Year 6 get to learn Japanese language as a compulsory subject. When I went through the school, I saw a large classroom that had Japanese style art of Mountain Fuji and it said, “Japanese Classroom”.  First, what really surprised me is the fact that so many Japanese people live in Cairns! I didn’t count it, but I presume there are at least more than 100 people! At the festival, they sold  yakisoba, taiyaki shaved ice (kakigori) ,macha drinks, and water yoyos.  My host sisters and I ate one kakigori each. It was great to eat in such hot weather!  Other than the food, at an indoor stage, there were performances of traditional Japanese drums and the dance “Yosakoi”.  I heard that the drum team had played in a big event in Melbourne, where all the drum teams gathered and played all together at once. I was very impressed with the excellent performance. Also, there were some booths that you could get massages, do artwork, and write messages to the people in Fukushima. Through this festival, I thought this event was a great opportunity to spread Japanese culture and become a charity for Fukushima.

Next, I will write about my shopping spirit with Kanae.  It was an impulse decision to go shopping that day. We went to Cairns Central, and it was my first time to go there. Compared to the shopping malls in Japan, it was of course extremely spacious. While we were looking at one of the stores, I was surprised that the shirt I wanted was much cheaper here than buying it in Japan! I bought some clothes and stationery for myself and also lots of souvenirs and snacks for friends and family.

This might be off topic, but I am a boba(tapioca) lover, so to be honest, one thing about Japan I really miss here in Australia is boba… I thought I would never be able to have boba here in Australia. However, Kanae told me that there was Gong Cha, a very popular boba store inside Cairns Central! I was so delighted , and it tasted exactly the same as the ones in Japan.

みなさん、こんにちは！オーストラリアのセント・アンドリュースにターム留学中の江尻楓花です。なんと悲しいことにこれで私のターム留学最後のレポートとなります…もう現在、7週目で残り一ヶ月を切りました（泣）このレポートでは、週末に行った日本のお祭りのイベントとCairns Centralでのお買い物についてかきたいと思います。

まず、Japan Day of Hope という日本のお祭りのようなイベントについてかきたいと思います。このイベントは、ケアンズに在住の日本人が集まって福島の子供たちや、東日本大震災で被災された方に寄付をする用にお金を集めます。実は、友達に誘われてこのイベントに行こうと思ったのですが、当日、急用でキャンセルされたのでホストファミリーと行きました。このイベントは Edge Hill State Schoolという学校で開催されました。この学校の幼稚園から6年生の生徒は必修で日本語を習うそうです。学校の中を歩いている時、富士山の絵など日本風の絵と一緒に日本語教室とかいてある大きな教室の前を通りました。まず一番驚いたことは、こんなにもケアンズに日本人が在住していることです。数えてはいないけど、多分少なくとも１００人はいました！お祭りでは、焼きそば、たい焼き、抹茶味の飲み物、かき氷、水風船などを売ってました。私とホストシスターは一個ずつかき氷を食べて、この日はすごく暑かったのでヒンヤリしました！食べ物や水風船以外に、室内のステージで伝統的な太鼓やヨサコイダンスのパフォーマンスが行われていました。途中で聞いた話ですが、その太鼓チームはメルボルンで行われた大勢の太鼓チームが集まって演奏するイベントにも参加した有名な団体だそうです。素晴らしい演奏に感動しました。また、その他にも色々なブースがあり、マッサージや美術、福島の方にメッセージなど充実していました。私はこのイベントを通して、日本の文化を伝えられるし、福島の援助になるのでとても良い機会だなと思いました。

次に、友達とお買い物に行ったことについて書きたいと思います。実は当日行くことが決まりました(笑)私たちはCairns Centralに行きました。私は行くのが初めてでした。日本のショッピングモールに比べるとすごく広いです。いくつかのお店を回っている間、びっくりしたのが個人的に好きなブランドの服で欲しかった服が日本で買うより安かったのです！なので二着買いました。服以外にも、文房具や雑貨やお菓子など友達や家族にお土産をたくさん買いました！

また、実は私、大のタピオカ好きで、正直、日本のもので今一番恋しいと思っていたものでした（笑）オーストラリアに来て絶対にタピオカなんて飲む機会ないだろうと断念したはずが…なんと友達から、Cairns Centralにあの有名なゴンチャ（タピオカ屋さん）があるという情報を耳にし、本当に嬉しかったです。日本で飲むのと全く同じ味で美味しかったです！
