From Australia, Report from Minori S. at St. Andrew’s Catholic College, 2020. 04.01.

Hello, everyone. This is my final report about my exchange at St. Andrew’s Catholic College in Australia.

During St Andrew’s Catholic School life, I noticed the importance of English pronunciation. I talked about ‘Vegemite’ with my friends. Vegemite is a famous fermented food in Australia. I asked my friend “Do you like vegemite?” However, she couldn’t understand my question. I explained by pictures, so she could understand it. Then she said to me “Vegemite is V, not B.”  Also, we talk about differences in pronunciation like “play” and “pray”.  I knew there are differences between those alphabets, I didn’t care about it, and I didn’t think it is important. However, I noticed native people recognize alphabets by moving of mouth when they pronounce them.  I tried pronouncing the words of “play” and “pray”, but I couldn’t say ‘pray’. It was difficult for me, but I will practice it, and I’d like to be able to speak English fluently.

I went to the zoo called Harley’s Crocodile Adventure.  There are many crocodiles living in the pond in this zoo. I joined the guided tour of the zoo. First, I rode a ship and saw adult crocodiles. The tour guide lured them with meat, and it was dynamic that they bit the bait. After that, I went to a fish tank for crocodiles. I touched a baby crocodile’s skin. It was hard but smooth. Of course, I met koalas here. Some were sleeping but looked very pretty. I could take a picture with the Koala. When I cuddled Koala, I was very happy because it was one of the things I wanted to do in Australia.

My Australia life suddenly finished last weekend. There are very special memories there in Australia, so I was very sad that I had to leave suddenly because of coronavirus. I’m going to make good use of this experience of mine in the future.

みなさんこんにちは。これは私のオーストラリアの姉妹校、セント・アンドリュースでのターム留学についての最後のレポートです。

私はSt. Andrew’s で過ごす中で、発音の大切さに気がつきました。私はベジマイトについて友達と話していました。ベジマイトはオーストラリアで有名な発酵食品です。私は、ベジマイトは好きかを友達に尋ねましたが、彼女は私の質問を理解することができませんでした。写真を用いて説明したところ彼女は理解できました。そのとき彼女は「ベジマイトはBではなくてVだ。」といいました。

また、playとprayの発音の違いについて話しました。私はこれらのアルファベットに違いがあることを知っていましたが、注意していなかったし、大切だとあまり思っていませんでした。しかし、私はネイティブの人は口の動きでアルファベットを認識しているのだと気が付きました。私はplayとprayを発音しようとしましたが、prayが言えませんでした。私はまだ難しいと思いましたが、練習して流暢な英語を話せるようになりたいです。

Harley’s Crocodile Adventureと呼ばれる動物園に行った時のことです。この動物園の池には、クロコダイルがたくさんいました。私はガイドツアーに参加しました。始めにボートに乗って大人のクロコダイルを見ました。ツアーガイドの方がお肉でクロコダイルをおびき寄せ、見せてくれました。クロコダイルが餌に噛みつく光景はダイナミックでした。そのあとクロコダイルを育てるための水槽に行きました。私は赤ちゃんのクロコダイルの皮膚を触りましたが、それは堅く、それでいてすべすべしていました。ここではもちろんコアラにも会いました。何匹かは眠っていましたが、とても可愛いかったです。私はコアラと一緒に写真を撮ることができました。コアラを抱っこすることはオーストラリアでやりたかったことの一つだったので、抱っこしたときはとても幸せでした。

私のオーストラリアでの日々は、残念ながら先週末で終わってしまいました。そこにはたくさんの特別な思い出があり、コロナウイルスのために突然帰国しなければならなくなったことがとても悲しかったです。私はこの経験を未来に活かしたいと思います。
