This is America!!- Vol.6

Friday, July 31^st

Good Friday has come with beautiful clear sky.  Yesterday’s heavy rain took away with humidity and brought bracing air.  Cool breeze celebrates this happy Friday.

Today, in the morning, we had another special class on “education in America” with Dr. Ann Monroe. 

We are so proud to have such a chance to learn about US education because Dr. Ann Monroe-Baillargeon is Dean of School of Education at University of Saint Joseph.  She is a professor of education and special education for children with some disabilities.

At first of this class, she gave our students a kind of word puzzle game.  She showed them the picture of the word “TEACHER.”  Then she asked them to answer a word beginning each letter of “T-E-A-C-H-R” to describe what a teacher is like.  For example, T is “technical”, E is “energetic” and A is “active”.  Students were eager to think about each word to describe it with their image of TEACHER in their minds.  In the long run, students came to think of what is required to be a good teacher.  This task is so interesting and impressive, which tells us many things about education.  Dr. Ann Monroe said, “Sometimes the easier it looks, the more profound it will be.”

After the class, Dr. Ann Monroe guided us to her office and showed her many valuable pictures to us.  Otsuma Nakano students are all amazed with her hospitality and greatness.  They have learned one more excellence of education in America today.

In the afternoon, students went to the huge shopping mall, the Westfarms Mall, with their language partners.  They had a very good time walking around the shopping mall and looking for what they have wanted.  This must be one of the memorable experiences they have done in America.

Into the evening of good Friday, people looked much happier.

グッドフライディ！雨が上がって、空気がカラッとして。風が気持ちいい幸せな金曜日になりました。

今日の午前中は、昨日から引き続き、セント・ジョセフ大学教育学部長・アン・モンロー教授による教育学の特別授業です。先生の授業は、とてもやさしいアプローチです。難しい講義ではありません。TEACHERの文字を示して、それぞれの文字で始まる単語で、先生の仕事を表す言葉を考えて、答えなさいというアクティビィティ。生徒たちは日頃、学校で習っている先生方を具体的にイメージしながら、それを表す単語を一生懸命に考えていました。いろんな言葉が出てきます。それによって普段、どんな先生に習っているかもわかる仕組みになっています。そして、最終的に、生徒たち自身が先生とはどんな仕事をしていて、どんな資質が要求されるかに自然に気づいていきます。何と奥の深い授業なのでしょう。アン先生の教育者としての深さが伝わってきます。

授業後は、アン先生のオフィスにも案内してもらい、写真を見せてもらったり、写真を取り合ったり。その親切な姿勢に改めて深い感銘を受けました。

午後はお待ちかねのショッピングモール・ウエストファームでのショッピングです。ランゲージパートナーの学生と一緒に、いろいろ教えてもらいながら、アメリカでのショッピングを楽しみました。金曜の夕方らしいリラックスした幸せな空気が漂っています。
