This is America!! – Vol.12

Thursday, August 6^th,

It’s clear up in the morning and getting cloudy in the afternoon.   Cool breeze makes us feel comfortable.  It’s not so war, which is the perfect day for enjoying a baseball game outside with hot dogs and cool beverages.

Today and tomorrow, we have a very special class of discovering nursing careers and education with Dr. Terry Kinsey.  Today, at first we joined a class for some university students on nursing.  The students and Dr. Kinsey were discussing how patients would be always feeling.  Dr. Kinsey said to her students, “What matters to nursing is to consider how patients are feeling now.” Some of the students are wearing fuzzy glasses and earplugs to experience how hard it must be for old patients to live a daily life.

This will be the first opportunity for all of the Otsuma Nakano students to join a real university class for nursing.  So, they looked so overwhelmed to the atmosphere about this class and the power of Dr. Kinsey.  But also this is sure to be a wonderful experience for them to have a chance to study about nursing with such a professional doctor at university in America.  Dr. Kinsey advised us that it’s also quite important to avoid being painful or hurt in nursing in America.

In the afternoon, we had another chance to experience “real America”, which is a baseball game. We went to the stadium to see the New Britain Rock Cats baseball game.  This team is one of the minor league teams, but the game itself looked exactly the same as the major league one.  Before the game starts, people stand up to hear and sing the national anthem of USA, the Star Spangled the Banner.  Otsuma Nakano students enjoyed watching the game with hot dogs, cheese burgers, a bunch of popcorns, huge ice creams with chocolate sauce drizzled and cokes.

Unfortunately, the local team, the Rock Cats, was not doing well today.  But we all figured it out that baseball is one of the great American cultures.

今朝もきれいな青空。空気がさわやかです。午後になって雲が出てきましたが、吹く風はクールで、ますます野外の野球観戦にはピッタリの天気になりました。

今日と明日は、テリー・キンゼイ教授による看護学の特別授業があります。今日は実際にアメリカの大学で実際の看護学の授業を見学しました。患者に寄り添うことについて、学生とキンゼイ教授がディスカッションをしています。患者はその時、どんなふうに感じているかを常に意識すること。そのために、特殊なメガネをかけたり、耳栓をしたりで、日常生活での不自由さを実感する体験も行います。

ほとんどの生徒にとっては、大学の看護学の授業を受けること自体、初めての体験でしょう。ましてやアメリカの大学での看護学の講座を博士である先生から直接、教わることは、なかなかできない体験です。生徒たちは、その雰囲気とキンゼイ教授の迫力に圧倒されながらも、頑張っていました。これもまた今後に向けての素晴らしい体験の一つです。

午後は、アメリカ文化体験の大きなポイント。野球観戦です。地元のマイナー・リーグのチーム、ニュー・ブリテン・ロック・キャッツの試合を見ました。マイナー・リーグではありますが、メジャーの試合と同じように、試合前のアメリカ国歌の斉唱から始まります。スタントで、ホットドックやチーズバーガー、ポップ・コーン、アイスクリーム、そしてコークと一緒に応援です。小さい子供たちもたくさん応援に駆け付けています。

残念ながら、地元とのチームは調子が出なかったようですが、野球がアメリカ文化の大きな一部となっていることを実感できたと思います。
