From America_Study at University of Saint Joseph_11

Here comes another Monday with beautiful sunshine, dry air and cool breeze.  It’s not so warm, which is the perfect day for enjoying easy mountain climbing in the afternoon. Time passes so quickly!  There are only three days left for us to stay at University of Saint Joseph.

Today and tomorrow, we have a very special class of discovering nursing careers and education with Professor Terry Kinsey of the University of Saint Joseph.  All of the students were gathered in Nursing Lab, McDonough, where you can find a lot of remarkable real medical facilities.

First thing we did in this Nursing Lab, we washed our hands very carefully with hand sanitizers like real nurses. And then, we all put on some kinds of medical wears, gloves, hair-caps, and special glasses.  These are for the special medical treatment.  With the advice from Professor Kinsey, students gave it a try to act as a real nurse and do some medical treatments to their mannequin -patients.  The room is just like an authentic medical operation room with full equipment.

Second, students examined their own heartbeat sound and breath with real stethoscope.  They were seriously counting their own heartbeat pulse in a minutes and then checked out their partners’ heartbeat pulse.  Some of them suddenly cried out, “I can hear the sound of her heartbeat so clearly and strongly.”  

What’s more, our students gave it a try to check out heartbeat pulse of mannequin -patients. This mannequin patient controlled by lots of computers is suffering from asthma, so that student-nurse had to take care of him carefully and examine his heartbeat pulse with her won stethoscope.  Sometimes the patient had a cough violently.  A student-nurse is required to tell the sound of heartbeat from the noise of coughing.  Eventually, they did very good jobs!

This can be the first opportunity for all of the Otsuma Nakano students to join a real university class for nursing.  So, they looked so overwhelmed to the atmosphere about this class and the power of Professor Kinsey.  But also this is sure to be a wonderful experience for them to have a chance to study about nursing with such a great professor at a university in America.  Pretending to be a nurse even for a very short time will benefit them in the future of them. 

二度目の月曜日、眩い太陽と乾いた空気、そして気持ちのよい風が吹いています。今日は午後に山登りのハイキングが予定されていますが、パーフェクトな天気です。時間がたつのは早いもの。ここセント・ジョセフ大学で過ごすのもあと3日となりました。

今日と明日は、セント・ジョセフ大学の看護学の教授、テリー・キンゼイ先生による特別看護学の授業です。場所はセント・ジョセフの看護学のラボ。実際の医療機器がそろっているところです。

まず、生徒たちは手についた細菌を洗い流し、看護師のように清潔にします。そのあとで、あらかじめ用意された看護師のキットを身に着けます。ウエア、手袋、マスク、特殊なゴーグルも身につけます。これらは実際の医療器具です。キンゼイ先生のアドバイスで、実際の看護師になったように患者の人形を診察していきます。

次に生徒たちは自分の心臓の音と肺の呼吸する音を実際の聴診器で聞いてみました。皆、真剣です。そして、ペアになったパートナーの心臓の音も診察しました。自分の心臓の音のクリアな感じに驚く生徒もいます。

さらに、患者の人形を使って診察をしてみました。この人形はコンピュータで細かく制御されています。さまざまな病状をコンピュータで再現することができます。ここでは喘息の患者の心臓の音の診察をしてみました。きちんと肺の呼吸の音と心臓の音を聞き分けることが求められますが、皆、真剣に取り組み、きちんとできました。

今回のこのアメリカの大学での看護学のクラスの体験は高校生には初めての体験だったと思います。大学のラボの雰囲気とキンゼイ先生のパワーに圧倒されていたようです。しかし、これは間違いなく貴重な経験となったと思います。看護を志すかどうかは別にして、アメリカの大学での実習を体験したことは、参加した生徒の将来の進路を考える上で大きな意味を持つでしょう。
