From Australia Study Report on St. Andrew’s Catholic College_170212

We are more than happy and proud to share with you all the following updated report from Kyoka Maeda, an exchange student studying at St. Andrew’s Catholic College in Australia.  Her report gives her strong and specific feedback on the classes she is taking at this prestigious school in Australia.  

Hello!  This is Kyoka Maeda from Cairns in Australia.  The weather in Cairns is very unstable, and it has been raining on and off.  I am an eleventh year student here, and today, I would like to talk about my school life in St Andrew’s Catholic College.

The most interesting class of all is English. We discuss about one thick book, and we have to read a few pages until the next class. The students look up some information of the author on the Internet using their laptop.  Not only the information of the author, but also we focus on how the characters feel, what kind of situation they are in, and how the economic conditions were in the age.  

Another class which impressed me was religion and ethics.  When we have the class two periods in a row, we stretch out on the floor, or sit on the chair and close our eyes to become composed.  Everyone calls this “meditation.”  After that, we write down what you just have in your brain on your note, which is quite uncommon in Japan. We mainly study about five religions. Christianity, Islam, Buddhism, Hinduism, and Judaism.  I haven’t had my ethics class in my school back in Japan yet, so it was very interesting.

Also, I have found chemistry and biology a bit difficult.  Even if I already learned the same thing in Japan, I get confused and it takes a long time for me to understand it in English. Although, I can gain a sense of achievement when I understood it all by myself. During my biology class, I had a quiz using our laptop. It was like a quiz show on TV and the students did their best to beat their friends. I think we should do this in Japan too, because it makes us motivated. It is hard, but I can obtain many knowledge and it is very worthwhile, so I am interested in it!

Every class is very fun and interesting. I would like to acquire lot more knowledge and I would like to use it in the future.

こんにちは！オーストラリアのケアンズに滞在中の前田響佳です。ケアンズの天候は不安定で、雨が降ったりやんだりしています。

私は１１年生で、今日は私のここでのスクールライフを紹介したいと思います。 最も魅力を感じた授業は英語の授業です。ひとつの分厚い本について勉強をし、次の授業までに何ページまで読んでくるということが決まっています。本については作者の情報を生徒は自分のパソコンを使って調べます。作者の情報のみならず、登場人物の気持ちやおかれている状況、当時の経済状況などにも着目して授業をしています。

もう一つ、印象的だと感じたのは宗教と倫理の授業です。二時間授業が続く日は授業の最初に10～20分程度床に横になったり椅子に座ったりして、目を閉じて心を落ち着かせます。みんなはこれを「メディテーション（日本語での意味は『瞑想』）」と呼びます。その後はふと頭に浮かんだことをノートに書き留めるなど、日本ではあまりしないことをしました。この授業では五つの宗教を主に勉強します。キリスト教、イスラム教、仏教、ヒンドゥ―教とユダヤ教です。私はまだ日本で倫理の授業を受けてなかったのでとても面白いです。

また、化学と生物の授業が少し難しいと思いました。いままでにやったことのある分野でも、英語になると混乱し、理解するまでに時間がかかります。しかし、自分の力で理解ができると達成感が得られます。生物の授業中に、パソコンを使ってクイズをやりました。それはテレビのクイズショーみたいで、生徒は友達に勝とうと頑張っていました。私たちのモチベーションを上げてくれるので、日本もやるべきだと思います。これは、大変ですが、色々な知識がえられて、遣り甲斐があり楽しいです。

すべての授業は楽しく、興味深いです。沢山の知識を身に着けて将来活かせたらいいなと思います。
