From America Report on Pleasant Hill High School_170405

Otsuma Nakano is very highly of these exchange students who are joining local schools for our study abroad programs.  One of the exchange students, Akane Takahashi, who is studying at Pleasant Hill High School in Oregon, America, will share her outstanding experience there in the following report.

Hi everyone! This is Akane Takahashi from Pleasant Hill High School. It has been raining almost every day during winter time but now it is getting warmer and warmer.

On March 9th, we had an event called “Gatehouse night”. This is an event held by Mr. Billie participants. Gatehouse is a pizza place in Pleasant Hill.  I went to Gatehouse after our track practice. We worked there as a part of the staff. I mostly did the dishes, which wasn’t fun because nobody knew that my friends and I were working. Towards the end, I got a chance to be a waitress, and I served pizza to guests there. It was very fun because it was the first time I've worked in a restaurant.

On March 4th, I stayed overnight at my best friend Nicole’s house. We usually do hard workouts on Friday in track, so we were both very tired. We took a shower and headed to the Pleasant Hill Community Theatre. The play was Three Wishes. It was the play by elementary school kids, so it was very cute. Since it was opening night, it was kind of awkward. After the play, we went to Nicole’s house and watched movie called Princess Diaries. We really liked the movie. Then we talked, talked, and talked forever. The next morning, we made brownies and watched another movie called “She’s the Man”. It was also a good movie. I really enjoyed staying at her house. I want to have sleepovers with her again.

On the following weekend, I went to the University of Oregon for PeaceJam Northwest. PeaceJam is an international organization that connects youth and Nobel Peace Laureates. They encourage people to make a change in themselves, to the community, and the world. On Saturday, we listened to Oscar Arias, a man who got Nobel Prize and was the president of Costa Rica. It was such a good opportunity to hear a great speech from Oscar. Throughout the day, we had a "family group" and discussed how we can contribute to make the world a better place. Now we are trying to help out by filling up Life Bags at our school. It is about asking people in school to bring in their old but still usable backpacks and writing utensils to school and deliver them to immigrants in Greece. We are still discussing to see if we can do it or not. This would be a fantastic project for our school!

The latter half of my spring break, my host family and I went to Redwoods National Park in Northern California. To save gas, we rented a car in Eugene and went off to the coast. It took us about seven hours to get to Crescent City in California but it was worth it. On the way to Crescent City, we stopped several times to enjoy the gorgeous view of the coast. Here are some pictures. It was so beautiful but it was very windy. I missed the San Diego beach where I used to live. On the next day, we hiked in the Redwoods National Park and hiked for three hours. The trees there are called old-growth and they were humongous. I was just surprised and impressed about how earth can form such beautiful life. I’d love to go back there again with my family and show them how amazing it is.

皆さんこんにちは。Pleasant Hill High School の高橋茜です。冬の間は毎日雨が降っていましたが、最近では晴れの日も増えてきてだんだん暖かくなってきています。

３月9日にGatehouse Nightというイベントがありました。このイベントはMr. Billie に参加している人たちで行われました。Gatehouse とはPleasant Hillにあるピザ屋さんです。陸上の練習が終わった後にピザ屋さんに向かいました。私は主に裏で食器を洗っていてその夜Gatehouseに来た友達は気がついてくれなかったので残念でした。後半はウエイトレスとして働きました。その夜の売り上げの20%はKids Networkに寄付されます。こういう仕事をしたことがなかったのでとても楽しかったです。

3月4日に私の仲の良い友達の一人である

Nicoleの家にお泊りをしました。陸上では毎週金曜日はきつい練習なので二人とも疲れていました。それぞれシャワーを浴びたあと、コミュニティーシアターに行き劇を観ました。Three wishesという劇で、小学生だけの劇だったので皆可愛かったです。そしてその夜が初めてのショーだったので、セリフを間違えたりしている子もいました。劇が終わった後はNicoleの家に行きPrincess Diariesという映画を観ました。夜は夜更かしをしてしゃべり続けました。翌日はブラウニーを作ってShe's the Manという映画を観ました。その二日間はとても楽しかったのでまた彼女とお泊りをしたいです。

翌週はPeaceJam Northwestというイベントがオレゴン大学で行われ、それに参加しました。PeaceJamとは国際的な組織で、ノーベル賞受賞者と子供たちがお互いに面会することによって世界の平和を繋げるものです。自分、コミュニティー、そして世界を変える事をテーマに活動しているグループです。土曜日はOscar Ariasというノーベル賞受賞者の講演を聴きました。彼はまたコスタリカの元大統領でもあります。その後はファミリーグループに分かれて、どうすればこの世界がよりよいものになるのかについてディスカッションを行いました。私の学校で今はLife Bagsという活動を始めました。私たちの学校の生徒から古くなったけどまだ使えそうなリュックサック、ノート、筆記用具などを集めてギリシャの難民の子供達に届けてあげようという活動です。まだ実現可能かどうか話し合い中ですが、実際私たちがものを集めてギリシャに届けられたら嬉しいです。

春休み後半はカリフォルニアにあるRedwoods国立公園に行きました。ガソリンを節約するためにユージーンでレンタカーをしてから向いました。Crescent Cityという場所には車で7時間かかりましたが、それほど時間をかけて行く価値はありました。Crescent City に行く途中に何回か止まってゴージャスな景色を楽しみました。それがこの写真です。とても綺麗でしたが、風がとても強かったです。昔住んでいたサンディエゴのビーチを懐かしく思い出しました。次の日はRedwoods国立公園で三時間ハイキングしました。Redwoodsは世界一大きい木が有名で、実際それを見て自然の力でこんなに美しいものが作れることに関心しました。今度は私の家族と訪れたいです。
