From America – Study at the University of Saint Joseph #13

It was a little bit chilly morning with cloudy sky today, but in the daytime, sunshine was getting back. We can feel like the summer would be getting closer, which means that we have more 3 days to stay at USJ.
Today we had a very speical lecture by Professor Kathleen on American Government. As we introduced before, Prof. Kathleen is a coordinator who is mainly in charge of this Otsuma Nakano USJ program. She graduated from a university in Boston and studies abroad in UK. And the she had been very active as a criminal lawyer at the forefront of her work in New York City for 25 years. Also she is a current lawyer and teaches law and American Constitution at the University of Saint Joseph.
Her lecture started with the process of the US presidential election in 2016, when each candidate, Hilary Clinton and Donald Trump competed heavily. Do you know why Hilary Clinton won the popupar vote but lost the presidency in this election? In 18th century, Founding Fathers of the United States of America made a system that the presidential election should not a simple popularity contest. Also, in the US politics, the power of President and the Congress are completely equal, so that decision making should be going with building up the talks and compromise between various political positions. All conflicts among them are finally decided by law and court, which means to be "judicial". Democray under the Constitution of the United States means to be the process that things are proceeding with lots of discussion and compromise. This is what Prof. Kathleen taught us today.
What's more today, we had a special presentation on the process of USJ addmisson and all universities in America. In universities of America, you can study both a major and a minor. The relationship between students and faculties are so close because student-faculty ratio is 11:1 and average class size is 14. In addtion, 95% of USJ graduates are employed full-time or enrolled in graduate school within six months of graduation. Furthermore, we were advised about how to get scholarship and that specific English test scores and GPA are required for application as an international student. This presentation sounds so beneficial to the Otsuma Nakano students in considering their future.
今日も曇り空の少し寒いくらいの朝を迎えましたが、少しずつ太陽の光が戻ってきました。夏がだんだんと終わりに向かっていることを感じさせます。このUSJのプログラムもあと3日の滞在となりました。
今日はセントジョセフ大学のキャサリーン教授によるAmerican Governmentの特別レクチャーです。キャサリーン教授は今回の私たちのUSJプログラム全体をコーディネイトしてくださっている先生です。ボストンの大学で学位をとって、イギリスにも留学、そして26年間にわたって、ニューヨークで第一線の弁護士として活躍された方。そのキャリアを踏まえて、今も現役の弁護士であり、かつこの大学で、アメリカの法学、憲法などについて教えています。
まずは、2016年のアメリカの大統領選挙について。ヒラリー・クリントン候補とドナルド・トランプ候補の選挙の得票数と実際に大統領の当選が逆転していることから説明が始まりました。なぜ、このようなことが起こるのか。18世紀にアメリカの建国者たちは、大統領選挙を単純な人気投票としないために、慎重に選べる仕組みをつくったことが説明されました。また、大統領の権限だけで、アメリカの行政が進むわけではないこと、ゴングレスという議会と大統領は、等しい力関係にあり、両者の合意と妥協で物事が進んでいくこと。そのルールを作っているのが、Judical というアメリカの司法であること。合衆国憲法による民主主義とは、さまざまな立場の協議と妥協が積み重なって進んでいくプロセスであること。こうしたことをキャサリーン教授は教えてくれました。
今日は、さらにUSJの大学入試入学担当のディレクターから、USJの大学全体のこと、アメリカの大学に進学するプロセスについての説明を受けました。アメリカの大学は、メジャーとマイナーという複数の専攻ができる仕組みになっていること。USJは、学生と教授の関係が親密で少人数制の教育を特徴としていること。また、大学卒業後の就職率の話、奨学金のことなどの説明もありました。日本の大学入試の仕組みとは違うアメリカの大学進学プロセスでは、評定平均値が非常に重要になってくること、インターナショナルスチューデントとして入学する際のTOEFL iBTやIETLSでの求められているスコアなどの具体的な話もありました。これからの進学を考える上で、とても有益な話、メモをとって聞き入っていました。
