Another week at the campus of USJ has started with beautiful summer sunshine.  This is the second Monday morning since we were here. All of the students looked a little bit tired because of yesterday’s busy tour to New York City.  But they were getting better when they got back to today’s classes.  

In the morning, a special class for computer graphic design by USJ marketing and communications staff in the McDonough Hall.  A specialist for computer graphic designer and marketing staff of USJ gave us a very interesting and helpful workshop on an app called “canvas.”  Students were making every effort to work out their own flyer or brochure with “canvas” independently.  Finally, they completed their own works beautifully.

And then, we made a visit to “physical assistant school of USJ”, which is affiliated to the medical and pharmacy department of USJ.  Many students are trying very hard to make practice about acquiring the skills to be a physical assistant.  Our students were impressed with its advanced facilities and how eagerly the students make practices.

In the afternoon, we highlighted the special science class with Professor Alevras Christina.  Prof. Alevras, who is a professor of biology in the University of Saint Joseph, took us to the Connecticut Science Center and instructed us its various science programs on ecology, human health, architecture, cosmology and meteorology.  Our students enjoyed various activities of watching and touching these exhibitions which feature interesting science essence with the guidance from Prof. Alevras.

2回目の月曜日の朝。夏の太陽と強い日差しの朝を迎えました。生徒たちは、昨日の盛りだくさんのニューヨーク訪問の疲れもあるせいか、朝はちょっと辛そうでしたが、午前中のクラスが始まると、少しずついつもの元気さと自分のペースを取り戻しました。

今日の最初の授業は、コンピュータ・グラフィック・デザインです。セントジョセフ大学のマーケティング広報スタッフの専門家から、デザインの重要性、ブランディングについての説明を受けました。

グラフィック・デザインについてのレクチャーの後は、生徒一人一人が、自分で自分の好きなものを効果的に紹介するフライヤーを作ってみました。指導するのは、世界各地でコンピュータ・グラフィック・デザイナーとして活躍してきたジョエル先生です。

Canva というソフトを使って、全員が自分のflyerを作りました。 先生方から、Well done!の声が飛びます。最後は非常に優れたflyerを全員、作ることができました。アメリカの大学で、専門のグラフィック・デザイナーの先生から直接、指導を受ける機会はとても貴重です。

次のクラスは、セントジョゼフ大学の医療系学部の１つ、フィジカルアシスタントのインテンシブの見学です。まず最初にコンピュータによる人体の詳細なグラフィックの説明を受けました。1人の患者をモデルに骨格、内臓から血管など、人体のリアルな内部の表示に驚きました。また、実際の授業を受けている学生たちの真剣なトレーニングの様子に、生徒たちも思わず緊張してしまいました。アメリカの大学は実地経験をとても重視していることを改めて実感しました。

午後は、セントジョセフ大学の生物学の教授、クリスティーナ先生の引率で、ハートフォードのダウンタウンにあるサイエンス・センターに行きました。ここは、環境、宇宙、気象、人体、建築、ロボット工学などさまざまなサイエンスを楽しんで、理解し、関心を深めることを目的とした多目的教育施設です。クリスティーナ先生のガイダンスで、生徒たちはさまざまなサイエンスを体感して楽しみました。特にクリスティーナ先生は脳科学がご専門です。人間の体の働きなどについて、先生も楽しくアドバイスを下さいました。
