From New Zealand Report on 1-year-long exchange at New Plymouth Girls’ High School_180819

A new report reached us from Arisa Odagiri, an exchange student who is studying at New Plymouth Girls’ high school.  Now Otsuma Nakano would like to share her very impressive and informative updated report with you all.

Hi everyone! I’m Arisa Odagiri. I’m a one-year-long exchange student in New Zealand. Four months will have past soon since I came here.  Term 3 has started, and classes are difficult, but I feel it is very fulfilling.  So, I will write about the next year’s class decision, meeting the mayor and the trip with the concert band.

We had an orientation for students to make decision which class they should take in the new year.  Students went to see the classes which they are interested in in order to decide which lesson to take for the next year. I was surprised because it was not in Japan. I was interviewed with my teacher because I’m an exchange student.  I was worried a lot, but my host mother helped me to decide which ones I should take.  It is impossible for me to think that I will be here during only Term 1 in the next year.

On 9th August, there was a special meeting where exchange students in New Plymouth and the mayor gathered.  I found that there are many exchange students from China.  I was very surprised because my host mother said New Plymouth has only one coed-school.  I found that there are many big differences between schools in Japan and New Zealand as I learn more about New Zealand.

From 17th to 19th August, I went to Wellington for a trip with the concert band I belong to. It took about 6 hours by bus because we took some breaks during our bus ride.  The accommodation where we stayed was a place like a hostel.  We had to prepare our meals by ourselves, so the member’s mother cooked for us.  To participate in the trip for this music festival was my first trip, so it was so fun to me.  I took a cable car for the first time at free time. I felt this experience was so great and precious to me. 

I would like to do a lot of things I can only do right now here in New Zealand.

皆さんこんにちは！ニュージーランドに留学中の小田切有沙です。ここに来てもうすぐ4ヶ月が経とうとしています。Term3が始まって勉強など大変ですがとても充実しているなと感じています。今回は来年の授業決めをしたこと、市長さんに会ったこと、スクールトリップに行ったことを書いていきたいと思います。

今月来年の授業を決めました。それは生徒たちが自分の興味がある分野の授業を観に行って決めるというものでした。日本ではないことなのでとても驚きました。私は留学生なので先生と面談をしました。とても悩んだのですが、私のホストマザーも手伝ってくれて決めることができました。来年はターム1だけだと考えるとあっという間でとても早いなと感じました。

8月9日にニュープリマスの留学生が集まって市長さんと会うというものがありました。中国からの留学生が多いなと感じました。私のホストマザーがニュープリマスには共学校が１つしかないんだよと言っていてとても驚きました。探せば探すほど日本とニュージーランドの違いがあるのだなと思いました。

8月17日から19日まで私が所属しているコンサートバンドのトリップでウェリントンまで行ってきました。バスで休憩を挟みながら行ったので約6時間ほどかかりました。私が泊まったところはホステルのような感じで、自分たちでご飯などは用意しなければいけなかったのでメンバーのお母さんが料理を作ってくださいました。このミュージックフェスティバルは私にとってはじめての旅行だったのでとても楽しかったです。自由時間にははじめてケーブルカーに乗りました。この旅行は私にとっていい経験になったのではないかと感じています。

ここでしか出来ないことを沢山していきたいです。
