From Ireland_ 1 Year Exchange Report on Dundalk Grammar School by Mizuki Komatsu

It’s our great pleasure to share another new report on Otsuma Nakano new exchange program in Ireland.  Dundalk Grammar School in Dundalk Ireland provides a great opportunity for an Otsuma Nakano student, Mizuki Komatsu, a Year 10 student, to enroll at the school for a year exchange program.  Her exchange at Dundalk has been appointed as TOBITATE! Young Ambassador Program by MEXT, which means that she is one of representatives of Japan. On behalf of all of Otsuma Nakano, we would like to present Mizuki’s report to you all!

Hello, everyone. I’m Mizuki Komatsu, a one-year exchange student studying at Dundalk Grammar School in Ireland. It’s been two weeks since I left Japan. The climate in Dundalk where I am staying is easy to change. The air temperature is about 20 degrees and the current climate in Ireland is colder than that in Japan.

In this report, I would like to write about my life in Dundalk.

I arrived at my host family’s home on August 27 in the late evening.  My host family welcomed me so much.  Let me introduce them first.  There are four kids in the family, and the youngest one is a 2-year-old baby boy. There are 3 elder kids and the eldest is a 14-year-old girl, followed by a 11-year-old boy and a 10-year-old boy.  And my host father is a police man, and my host mother is a student nurse. I felt very lucky because in case that I am in danger or ill, both my host father and mother will definitely help me from such crisis.

And then, I moved in to the school dormitory from August 28 since I will usually stay in the dorm during weekdays.  The school started from August 29 and I have started to meet new friends.  It may take me a while to make some good friends, but I feel very positive about myself so far.

At school, I took classes with local students. I felt all of the classes are very difficult, but as for what I do not know or understand, I am always asking my teacher and my friends.  Of course, it is very challenging for me to catch up with them for these classes now, but I will do my best.

The final class at school ends at around 4 o’clock, but my dormitory opens at 9 pm.  So, I play basket,go to the gym, talk to my friends and study hard while dormitory opens.

I have some difficulty in communicating with others in English and also it is so tough to catch up with my classes at school.  But now I am making every effort to use English positively, no matter how unskillful my English is.  I am keeping on trying and trying to make myself understood in English.

みなさんこんにちは。私は、アイルランドのダンドークグラマースクールに留学中の小松美月です。日本を出発してから二週間が経ちました。私が滞在しているダンドークは、気候が変化しやすいです。また、気温は日本よりアイルランドの方が20度ほど低いです。

このレポートでは、私のダンドークでの生活について報告したいと思います。

私は、８月２７日の夜遅くにホストファミリーの家に着きました。彼らは、私のことをとても迎いいれてくれました。最初に私のホストファミリーを紹介したいと思います。

その家族には、４人の子供がいます。末っ子は2歳の男の子です。そのほかに、年長の子供が3人います。長女は14歳の女の子で11歳の少年と10歳の少年が続きます。そして、私のホストファザーは警官で、ホストマザーはナースです。危険な目にあった際や病気になった際に、彼らが対応してくれるので、私はとても幸運を感じました。

そして、私は８月28日から週末になるまで平日は大抵、寮にいます。学校は、29日に始まり、新しい友達に出会います。その人達と仲良くなるには、多少の時間がかかると思いますが、私はこれまでのところ、ポジティブだと感じています。

学校では、地元の子達と一緒に授業を受けています。私は、授業がとても難しく感じましたが、わからないことは先生や友達に聞いています。アイルランドの授業は、今は難しいと思いますが、ベストを尽くしたいと思います。そして、授業が終わるのは午後の四時ごろですが、寮に入れるのは夜の９時半になるので、それまでバスケットボールをしたり、ジムに行ったり、友達と話したり、勉強をしたりしています。

英語がうまく伝わらなかったり、授業が難しかったりなどのたくさんの問題はありますが、今はどんなに拙い英語でも積極的に英語を使いたいと思います。
