Now a new school exchange in New Zealand has just started.  Otsuma Nakano has a special connection with a highly prestigious boarding school in Stratford, New Zealand.  An exchange student from Otsuma Nakano, Anna, kicked off her special exchange school life with her friends at its dorm of St. Mary’s Diocesan School.

大妻中野のニュージーランドの提携校でとても特別な学校が、セントメアリーズ　と呼ばれている全寮制（ボーディングスクール）の女子校です。昨年から、この学校と本校は提携して、留学プログラムを開始しました。自然豊かな地、ストラットフォードで、寮の仲間と一緒に生活をしながら、言葉、文化、宗教など、人生の基礎を作るたくさんのことを学んでいます。

Hi, everyone!  I’m Anna Shimizu. An exchange student from Otsuma Nakano studying at St Mary’s Diocesan School now.  This beautiful school is located in Stratford, New Zealand.  Stratford is a countryside.  In this town, there is no McDonald’s, Starbucks and some popular fast food restaurants, but we have more valuable things here, which are beautiful nature, peaceful silence and amazing environment.

Now, let me change my topic. I would like to talk about my school.  St Mary’s Diocesan School is a school for Christianity.  So, after lunch, we all go to chapel to give a prayer and to listen to our teachers’ preaches.

This school have a dormitory. Many students stay there and go to school from the dormitory. I’m one of them. But sometimes I can go to home stay in weekends, so I am very happy to experience both ways of stay.

On the day of January 29, I had an occasion to participate in Powhiri. Powhiri is a kind of entrance ceremony for Maori (Native people in NZ).  We went into a chapel while singing songs, and then gave greetings to the teachers sticking with nose. This greeting is called Hongi. It is a lot of fun to have such a cross-cultural experience.  So, at the time, I was determined to take part in such kinds of things actively as much as possible if I have opportunities again.

こんにちは、ニュージーランドのストラトフォードという町にあるSt Mary’s Diocesan School に留学中の清水杏夏です。ストラトフォードは田舎の街でマックドナルドもスターバックスもありませんが、沢山の自然に囲まれています。

今日はわたしの通っている学校についてお話ししますSt Mary’s D.S. はキリスト教の学校なので、ランチタイムの後にチャペルに集まり先生の話を聞いたり、お祈りをします。

この学校には寮が隣接していて、多くの生徒が寮から学校に通っています。私もそのうちの1人ですが、時々週末にニュープリマスにあるホームステイ先に行くこともあります。

1月の29日に私はポフィリという学校の行事に参加しました。ポフィリとは日本でいう入学式のようなものでニュージーランドの原住民であるマオリ族の伝統的な歓迎式です。

新入生は歌いながらチャペルに入場して、その後先生たちと鼻と鼻を合わせるホンギと呼ばれるマオリ族式の挨拶をします。

このような異文化体験をするのはとても楽しく、貴重な体験になったと思います。またこのような異文化体験ができる機会があれば積極的に参加しようと思います。
