From Cairns, Australia, Fuka Ejiri reported to us about her recent life and experiences there, which looks very interesting, informative and impressive.  We hope you all will be enjoying reading her report about her real Aussie life.

Good day mate! My name is Fuka Ejiri, an exchange student at St. Andrew’s Catholic College, which is our sister school in Cairns, Australia.  It has been 3 weeks since I came here and is almost 4 weeks. Now, I would like to write about the experiences I had here during the last few weeks.

First, let me talk about what happened on a normal weekday night when I was at home.  On the day, the weather wasn’t really good and it was raining very hard. What’ more we heard very big lightning sounds. It was about 5 o’clock in the afternoon, and when I was by myself in my room doing my homework, the air conditioner and the power suddenly went off!! I was so scared and immediately ran out to the living room to check what my host family was up to.  Luckily, I did manage to get myself a flashlight. My host mother told me that the reason why the lights went out was because of the thunderstorm, and the tree collapsed, so it had in impact on the power. It was very surprising because the blackout went on for about 6 hours after it started! I had to read, take a shower, and sleep in the dark. This night was very frightening and impressive to me, so I would not forget about it.

Next, I would like to talk about the last weekend. On Saturday, I went to Sugar World, located in South Cairns with my host family, and Kanae with her host sister Emily. My host family had been planning to go there from 2 weeks before originally for Emily’s birthday party (funny how they have the same names), my host sister Erin’s best friend from school, but it was postponed for 2 weeks due to Emily’s sickness and the unconditional weather. When we arrived and entered the park, there was a big peacock and since it was my first time to see one, I was very surprised!  This is a picture of it.  Sugar World had small pools and attractions for toddlers, 2 big slides, and a mat race. I still got a little sunburnt on my face even if I applied sunscreen, so it hurt a little… I was also surprised that Sugar World might actually be smaller than Summerland and Toshimaen in Tokyo even though Australia is a big country! However, I had a great time there.

On Sunday, my host family took me to Port Douglas, which is about an hour drive from home. We went with my host father’s parents, in other words, my host sister’s grandparents. By the way, their grandparents visit us often for dinner or after school because they live really close. On the way to Port Douglas, the view of the ocean and beaches were very beautiful, so my host family stopped for me to take a picture of the view. I have attached a photo. Port Douglas is famous for its markets only available on weekends. At the market, they were selling many kinds of goods such as magnets, decorations, Aboriginal art, food and drinks, etc… At first, my host mother found a store with homemade candles and I got to design my own candle that has many different scents. My mom loves candles, so when I get back, I will give it to her. I hope I can bring it back to Japan… Also, when I was walking through the market, I stopped by a man who makes jewelry and I watched at the samples that were exhibited. I decided to buy one for myself.  However, my host father said he would buy it and present it for me. I was very happy I could cry!!I still thank him so much. After shopping at the market, we went to have lunch and I ate a steak sandwich and it was very tasty! My host family said “So that’s what you call Aussie food” and it made me laugh. This weekend was very satisfying!

みなさん、こんにちは！オーストラリアのセント・アンドリュースにターム留学中の江尻楓花です。早くも留学開始から3週間、もうすぐ4週間が経とうとしています。さて、ここ最近の数週間についてこのレポートでかきたいと思います。

最初に、ごく普通の学校のある平日に経験したことについて書きたいと思います。この日は天気が悪く、大雨が続いていて、大きな雷の音も聞こえました。午後の５時頃、一人で、部屋で宿題をしているときに、急に部屋のエアコンと電気が消えたのです！私は怖かったのですぐに部屋を出て、ホストファミリーのところへ行きました。幸いなことに、私の分まで懐中電灯があったので安心しました。ホストマザーに聞いたら停電の理由はおそらく雷のせいで、木が倒れて電柱か何かにあたったからだといわれました。驚いたことにこの停電は約６時間続きました。暗い中で本を読み、シャワーを浴び、寝ました(笑)　この夜の経験はとても怖く印象的だったので絶対忘れません！

次に、先週末について書きたいと思います。土曜日に、ホストファミリーと岡田さんとホストシスターのEmily と一緒にSugar World という北ケアンズに位置するwater parkに行ってきました。私のホストファミリーは2週間前かEmilyというホストシスターの親友のバースデーパーティーに招待されてSugar Worldに行く予定でしたが、風邪や天気の悪さから２週間延期になってしまっていました。なんとパークに入った後、大きな一羽のオスのクジャクが羽を広げて出迎えてくれました！初めてクジャクを見たのでびっくりしました。ここのウオーターパークではクジャクを飼っていると聞きました。写真を貼り付けたのでぜひご覧になってください！Sugar World には子ども用に小さいプールや遊具があり、そのほかには大きな長くて急な滑り台やマットで滑るマット・レースなどがありました。気づいたら日焼け止めを塗っていても顔が日焼けして赤くなってしまって痛かったです(笑)。一つ驚いたことは、こんなに広いオーストリアのSugar Worldでも、東京のサマーランドや豊島園のほうが広い気がしました！それでも十分に楽しめたのでよかったです。

日曜日には、ホストファミリーに連れられPort Douglasという家から約一時間のドライブで行けるところへ行ってきました。このドライブにはホストファザーの両親、つまり私のホストシスターのおじちゃん、おばあちゃんも一緒に来ました。このおじいちゃん、おばあちゃんたちはすぐ近くに住んでいて、よく一緒に食事をしたり、放課後、家にいたりします。Port Douglas へ行く途中、海（ビーチ）の眺めがすごくきれいだったので、車を停めて写真を撮ることができました。その写真も貼り付けしました。Port Douglas は週末のマーケットが有名です。マーケットでは、マグネットや飾り、アボリジニーの美術作品、飲食物などたくさんのものを売っていました。そのなかでホストマザーが色々な香りがするホームメイドのキャンドルのお店を見つけ、ホストシスターと三人で作ってみました！日本に持ち帰れるといいですが、私の母はキャンドルが好きなので喜んでもらえることを期待しています。さらに、マーケットのお店をまわっていたら、一人の名前入りのネックレスなどを作っているおじさん職人を見つけ、展示してあった作品をみていました。日本では珍しく、可愛かったので買おうと思ったら、なんとありがたいことにホストファザーが買ってプレゼントしくれるといってくれて、すごく嬉しくて感謝しています。一通りお店を見終わったらランチをして私はステーキサンドウィッチを食べました。頼んだらホストファザーが「それこそがAussieの食べ物だ！」と言っていて面白かったです。サンドウィッチはとても美味しかったです。充実した週末を過ごすことができました！
