From New Zealand – Ami Suzuki, NPGH

An updated report on New Plymouth Girls’ High School reached us from Ami Suzuki, an exchange student studying there for term 1.  She will report to you what she experienced there in New Plymouth.

Hello everyone! I’m Ami Suzuki. I’m an exchange student of New Plymouth Girls’ High School in New Zealand.

About 3 weeks have passed since I came to New Zealand. I still have a lot of difficulties, but I have gotten used to living in New Zealand.　Now, I want to show you how I spend holidays here in New Zealand.

My host family goes to church every Sunday, because they are Christian.  Yes, it is a place called a church, but it doesn’t look like a church you imagine.  It is a place like a small live performance hall. Some band members played music and sang songs there. I was surprised that all the people who played music were local people who came to church. So, my host mother sang on the stage last week.  After the stage, the participants gathered in a cafe space to chat with drinking something and eating cookies. Sometimes they bring their own homemade food to enjoy a party there.

At that afternoon, a food track festival was held at Fitzroy beach, so I went there. There were a lot of food trucks there, and you could enjoy food of many countries in one place.  For examples you can enjoy Japanese sushi, Vietnamese food and French galette. There were also many desserts such as donuts and churros.

In this way, I am living a fulfilling life in New Zealand. Thanks to so many people, I can have a good time. So, I think I want to do my best the best during the rest of my time.

こんにちは！ニュージーランドのニュープリマスにあるニュープリマス・ガールズ・ハイスクールに留学中の鈴木彩水です。私がニュージーランドに来て約3週間が経ち、苦労する事も多々ありますが、やっとニュージーランドでの生活に慣れてきたところです。今回は私のある休日の過ごし方を紹介したいと思います。

私のホストファミリーはクリスチャンの為、毎週日曜日は教会に行きます。教会という名前ですが、皆さんの想像する様な教会ではなく、小さなライブホールの様な場所です。そこでは、バンドの人が音楽を演奏し歌を歌います。私が驚いたのは、音楽を演奏しているのは全員教会に来ている地元の方だという事です。ですから、私のホストマザーも先週ステージに立って歌を歌っていました。

ステージの後には、参加していた人達がカフェスペースに集まってコーヒーを飲んだり、クッキーを食べたりしながら、談笑しています。時には、それぞれの家庭で手作りした食事を持ち寄って、パーティーをする事もあります。

そして、その日の午後は近くのFitzroy beachという所でフードトラックフェスティバルが開催されていたので、そこへ行ってきました。そこには、沢山のフードトラックがあり、沢山の国の料理を1つの場所で味わえる様になっていました。例えば、日本の寿司、ベトナム料理、フランスのガレットなどです。ドーナツやチュロスなどのデザートもたくさんありました。

この様に、私はニュージーランドで学校生活や休日を含めて、とても充実した毎日を過ごしています。こうして私が毎日楽しく過ごせているのは、沢山の方々の支えがあるからだと思っています。その方達に感謝を伝える為にも、残りの期間を無駄にしない様に大切に過ごしたいと思います。
