From St. Mary’s Diocesan School in New Plymouth, Anna Shimizu updated her report on her experiences for her exchange program.  Here we go!

Hi! I’m Anna Shimizu. An exchange student studying at St Mary’s Diocesan School.  It’s been a month since I came here. Time passes so quickly that I would like to spend each day meaningfully.  Ever since I came to NZ, I have experienced various things. Everything was fresh and stimulating.

Today, I’ll report to you about the most impressive experience in NZ so far.  That is that I went to the camp for Year 10 at TOPEC in New Plymouth from 11th to 15th of February.

No electronic equipment was allowed for us to bring to this camp, so I thought it would be a very good opportunity to evaluate my English ability.  Prior to going to this camp, I had been worried about no phone life.  However, it was more enjoyable for me than usual because I had more opportunities to make communication with friends without phone.  At the camp, I experienced kayaking, high ropes, cliff diving, mud run and rock climbing.  I don’t like high. But I tried to challenge all activities. I felt a little scared at first, but I enjoyed it gradually and my fears faded away.

The most enjoyable activity was cliff diving.  This was the first for me to experience cliff diving in my whole life.  Cliff diving is to jump into water from a steeply protruding cliff.  At the first time I was scared and hesitated to jump into water, but my friends jumped in with me together.

On the final day, we did the outdoor camp.  I learned how to cross over the river without boat. That was really helpful.  After that, we tried to make a shelter with only string and vinyl cloth. It took a while to complete to make a shelter because it was difficult to find a flatland. It was a little hard to prepare meals ourselves, but it was a lot of fun.  I learned a lot of things in this camp.  I’d love to go camping again.

こんにちは！ニュージーランドのSt Mary’s D.S. に留学中の清水杏夏です。ここに来て早くも一ヶ月が経過しました。時がたつのはとても早いので、毎日を有意義に過ごしたいと思います。 ニュージーランドに来てから様々な経験をすることが多くとても楽しいです。今回のレポートでは、その中でも刺激的だった経験をお話しします。

私は２月11日から15日まで、ニュープリマスのTOPECと言う場所へ、学年行事のキャンプにいってきました。このキャンプは電子機器使用禁止のキャンプで、自分の英語力を確かめられるいい機会になりました。はじめはスマホを持って行けないことをとても不安に思っていましたが、スマホがない方が友達と沢山コミュニケーションをとることができて楽しかったです。

私はキャンプでハイロープと崖から水へのダイブ、泥の中を走ったり、ロッククライミング、川渡りを体験しました。私は高いところが嫌いでしたが、すべてのアクティビティに挑戦しました。初めは少し恐怖を感じましたが、それよりも楽しさのほうが強く恐怖心がなくなりました。

一番楽しかったアクティビティは崖から水へのダイブです。崖から水に飛び込むことは初めてで飛び込むのをためらっていましたが、友人が同時に飛び込んでくれました。

最終日には野外キャンプをしました。私はボートなしで川を渡る方法を教えてもらい、とてもためになりました。その後、私たちはビニール布と紐のみでシェルターを造るのに挑戦しました。シェルターを建てられる平地を探すのが大変で、時間がかかってしまいました。ご飯も自分たちで作ることになり少し大変でしたがとても楽しかったです。私はキャンプで沢山のことを学ぶことができました。また機会があれば行きたいです。
