Another exchange student studying at Sacred Heart Girls’ College in New Plymouth updated her report on her kiwi life with many fresh experiences.

Hello everyone!! I am Ruri Saito, an exchange student at Sacred Heart Girls’ College in New Zealand. It has already been 6 weeks since I came to New Zealand.  I’m leading a full life every day, but I’m really surprised at how quickly time passes. In this report, I would like to talk about Swimming Sports Day, which was held in February and my holiday in New Zealand.

On February 25, we had Swimming Sports Day at Aquatic Center, which is near the school. Originally it was going to hold on February 22, but it was put off because of rain. But on the day, it was really good weather for swimming, so I was happy!

At the swimming sports day, every student separated into 4 teams, called Vianney, Barbier, Lourdes and Chanel, and all teams competed against each other for their rankings.  Also, I had to wear costumes which matched my team color, so I wore red T-shirt and a bandanna, and also painted my face with the color paint! This is a photo of that day.

The oldest students of Year 13 cooperated and gathered up for cheering up each team. Also, we cheered students who were swimming competitions with some fight songs and danced to the music. What surprised me was that I could buy something at the shops such as snacks, ice cream, hot chips and so on. What’s more surprised me was that teachers didn’t take attendance and I could throw away my rubbish at venue’s rubbish box.  In Otsuma Nakano, it is natural that we can’t use any vending machines and we should take back our rubbish to our house, so it was a fresh experience. It was very good for me because I could enjoy these differences from our athletic festival in Otsma Nakano!

Next, I would like to talk about my holiday.  My host family is only host mother and host father, but my host mother has 5 grandchildren, so I often play with them on my holidays. They speak slowly and show me examples when I can’t understand what they said because they understand that I am an exchange student, so I can enjoy spending time with them! When they come to my host family’s house, we play some games such as Life game, Twister, Uno and so on. I like the life game the best because I can speak English a lot in that game!

Also, I went to a small zoo, which is in the park, called Pukekura park with a girl of 11 years old two weeks ago! I could see a lot of animals such as monkeys, birds, meerkats, pigs and sheep. We can enter the zoo for free, so many children were coming to see animals with their families! It was very enjoyable because I could talk with her about many interesting topics.

Moreover, I often play with my Japanese friends or take part in some events for international students on my other holidays. On the night of March 3rd, I took part in an event called “Fish & chips night.” It was that international students from different countries gathered together at the beach and ate fish and chips. I ate fish and chips with my host family, then I played at the beach with my Japanese friends. I was very happy to have had enjoyable times because it was for the first time in a while to meet some girls attending New Plymouth Girls High School!

I have been enjoying my life studying in New Zealand every day since I came here. I sometimes face a big barrier, but I’m believing that if I overcome it, there is a new discovery. So, I’m trying to do my best.  I want to do my best to make my overseas life much better!

みなさんこんにちは！！ニュージーランドのセークレッド・ハート・ガールズ・カレッジに留学中の斉藤瑠里です。こちらに来てから6週間が経ちました。毎日充実した日々を過ごしていますが、時間の流れの早さに驚くばかりです。このレポートでは2月に行われたスイミングスポーツデーと私のニュージーランドでの休日の過ごし方についてお伝えしようと思います。

2月25日に学校の近くにあるアクアティック・センターという場所でスイミングスポーツがありました。もともとは22日の予定が、雨だったため25日に延期になりましたが、その日はとても天気が良くスイミングデーに適した日だったので良かったです！スイミングデーでは生徒たちが赤(Vianney)、青(Barbier)、緑(Lourdes)、黄色(Chanel)の４つの組に分かれて順位を争いました。また、その日は自分のチームカラーに合ったコスチュームを着る必要があったので、私は赤色のTシャツとバンダナを身につけ、さらにフェイスペイントもしました。これはその時の写真です。

一番年上のyear13の生徒たちが協力して、それぞれのチームをまとめたり盛り上げ、チームごとに応援歌を歌って泳いでいる人を応援したり、音楽に合わせて踊ったりしました。私が驚いたことは、お店で自由にお菓子やアイス、ポテトなどを買うことができることと出席確認をしないこと、自分のゴミを会場のゴミ箱に捨てられることです。大妻中野では会場の自動販売機を使うことが禁止されていたり、自分のゴミは自分で持ち帰ることが当たり前なので、はじめての体験で新鮮でした。大妻中野の体育祭とは違った一面を楽しむことができて本当に良かったです！

次に私の休日についてです。

私のホストファミリーはファザーとマザーだけですが、ホストマザーには5人の孫(1、2、8、9、11歳)がいるため週末にはよく孫たちと一緒に遊びます。彼らは私が留学生で英語の勉強をしていることを理解してくれていて、私が話を理解できない時は、ゆっくり話してくれるのでとても楽しく過ごせています！彼らがわたしのホストファミリーの家に来るときは、人生ゲームやツゥィスター、ウノなどのゲームで遊びます。その中でも英語をたくさん使える人生ゲームが1番好きです！また、2週間前には11歳の子と2人で家の近くのプケクラパークという公園内にある小さい動物園に行きました！そこでは、猿や鳥、ミーアキャット、ぶた、羊などのたくさんの動物を見ることができました。さらに無料で入れるので小さい子がたくさん見に来ていました。彼女と面白い話をたくさん話せたので、とても楽しかったです！

他の休日は日本人の友達と遊んだり、留学生向けのイベントに参加したりしています。3月3日の夜にはフィッシュ&チップスナイトと呼ばれるイベントに参加しました。それは色々な国の留学生がビーチに集まってフィッシュ&チップスを食べるというものです。

私はホストファミリーと一緒に食べ、その後に日本人の友達と海で遊びました！ガールズハイの子達に会うのは久しぶりだったのでとても楽しい時間を過ごすことができて、嬉しかったです！

このように私はニュージーランドにきてから毎日留学生活を楽しんでいます！時には大きな壁にぶつかることもありますが、それを乗り越えたらまた新しい発見があるということを信じて頑張っています。ですから、残り1ヶ月しかない留学生活がより良いものとなるようにもっと努力していきたいです！
