One year exchange student attending Burnaby South Secondary School in Burnaby, Canada, Yui, reports about her very interesting experience about a payment system there at her school.

Hi everyone! I’m Yui, an exchange student at Burnaby South Secondary School in Canada. Now 6 months have passed since I came to Canada.  I have been enjoying my stay and school life here in Burnaby.  In this report, I will share with you an interesting story about a unique system in Canada that made me surprised.

I am taking a music class that will hold a training camp on the coming April.  My teacher recommended that all of the students taking the music class join this training camp. But this camp requires its participants to pay $240 for its cost, because we will stay in Whistler for three days and two night. Therefore, if students cannot afford to pay the fee, they will not participate in the camp unfortunately. However, there is a unique way that students who don’t have enough money will join the camp.  It is as follows:

First, a student buys a chocolate box. This chocolate box costs $40 by each box. Then the student who bought the chocolate box doesn’t have to pay the cost for the amount of money that student paid for the chocolate box. For example, if student bought 3 boxes chocolates, it means that he has already paied $240-$40×３boxes=$120. Therefore, the student has to pay only $120 for the camp fee. There are 8 packs in each chocolate box, so any student can sell it to teachers or friends. That’s why every student can join the camp.

When I heard this system from my teacher, it was first time for me, so I couldn’t understand the way it is.  But I bought one chocolate box actually and I could sell some chocolate boxes to others.  I was impressed by this system.  According to the teacher who taught me this system, a student of this music class student bought chocolates which were equivalent to 240 dollars. All students can join the camp by this system, so I want to this system to go around the world. Also, I was happy because I could learn different culture even if it was a small thing. I want to experience such kind of distinctive cultures of many countries. I will make the most of my time left for me to stay here in Canada.

こんにちは！カナダのバーナビーサウスに留学しているゆいです。留学生活ももう6ヶ月経ちました。今回は私がちょっとびっくりした海外ならではの制度についてお話ししようと思います。

私は音楽の授業をとっているのですが、その授業では４月に合宿があります。先生はなるべくこの合宿に参加してほしいと言っていました。しかし、その合宿はウィスラーという場所で2泊３日する合宿で費用も240ドルかかります。そうなると、行きたくても行けない人もでてきてしまいます。でも、そんな人でも行けるように海外の公立高校ならではの制度がありました。

まず、１箱40ドルのチョコレートを買います。そうすることで、買った分のお金だけ合宿の費用から除かれます。例えばチョコレートの箱を３箱買ったとしたら240ドル－40ドル×３箱＝120ドル　しか払わなくていいのです。その買ったチョコレート箱には８袋チョコレートが入っていて１袋５ドルで先生や生徒に売ることができます。売った分のお金だけ払わなくていいので、誰でも合宿に参加することが可能です。

最初に先生からこの話を聞いたときは初めてのことだったのでよく分からずに私は１箱チョコレートを買いました。そして、私は何個かチョコレートを売ることができました。実際に売ってみて、こんな制度があることにすごく感心しました。後から先生に聞いた話だと、240ドル分（合宿の費用）のチョコレートを買った生徒もいたそうです。こういう方法で全員が行くことができるのなら色々なところでもこのような制度が広まるといいと思いました。また、こんなちょっとのことでも異文化を学べることができるので留学にきて良かったと思っています。

残り4ヶ月の留学生活の中でまだまだ学べることはたくさんあると思うので出来るだけ異文化に触れられるように頑張りたいと思います。最後まで読んでいただきありがとうございます。
