One of the new exchange students from Otsuma Nakano at New Plymouth Girls High School, Hikaru Kito, reports us about her very impressive and happy experience there to share with you all.

Hello! everyone! I’m Hikaru Kito. I’m one of the exchange students studying abroad at New Plymouth Girls High School in New Plymouth, New Zealand.  It’s been a month since I came to New Zealand.  Time passes very quickly!!

Today I will report my recent event there to you all, which is my birthday.  I was very happy because I had  my birthday here in New Zealand this year. Many friends sang a birthday song for me during the morning tea time at school.  I was surprised that everyone started singing all of sudden, but I was very happy.

My host family also celebrated my birthday. My host mother made me fish pie, one of my favorite dishes, for dinner.  And I received green stone accessories as a surprise from my host family. A green stone is a traditional stone of Maori.  Each green stone has every meaning. I received the stone which signifies strength and independence.  It was as strong as the meaning of this stone and I wanted to be independent.

Another day, my friends came to my home and had a birthday party for me.  I was happy to talk to they a lot and get a gift or letter.  Also, my host mother, host brother and host sister made a birthday cake together.  I said I like that taste of chocolate and my favorite color is pink. She made a chocolate flavored cake with pink cream on top. It was so tasty.  It became a wonderful birthday thanks people around me.

ニュージーランドに来て1か月が経ちました。

今日は私の誕生日のことについてレポートを書きたいと思います。わたしは誕生日の日はとても充実したものでした。学校では友達がモーニングティーの時間に私のためにバースデイソングを歌ってくれました。突然のことに驚きましたがとてもうれしかったです。ホストファミリーも誕生日を祝ってくれました。ホストマザーは私がとても好きな料理のフィッシュパイを夜ご飯に作ってくれました。

また、サプライズでグリーンストーンのネックレスをもらいました。グリーンストーンはマオリの伝統的なアクセサリーだそうです。グリーンストーンには一つ一つ意味があり私がもらったものには、「強さ、自立」という意味があるそうです。私はそれを聞いて、強く自立した人になりたいと思いました。別の日には友達が家に来てくれて、一緒に誕生日会をしてくれました。友達がプレゼントやメッセージカードを用意してくれてとてもうれしかったです。

ホストマザー、ホストブラザーとホストシスターが私のために誕生日ケーキをつくってくれました。私がチョコレートが好きでピンク色が好きだと伝えると、チョコレート味で上にピンク色のクリームがのってるケーキを用意してくれました。周りの人のおかげで素敵な誕生日をすごすことができました。
