From Burnaby, Canada – Kick Off Report on Burnaby South Secondary School

I am Ruri Mochizuki, an international exchange student attending Burnaby South Secondary school for a year.  The school I am now going to is a rather big school in Burnaby area.  As you know, Canada is in high latitude areas, so it is bright until 20:00 now, but it is very cold.

As for my school life, I am taking 8 classes and there are 4 classes in a day.  Of course, we have a timetable, but it is different from that of Japan.  In Japan, school timetable is fixed from Monday to Saturday, but In my school, there are only two timetables, Day1 and Day 2.  So, we are taking classes in accordance to these two timetables alternately.

Each class is for about 80 minutes, so it is longer than class of Japanese school.  However, we can focus on each class because you can choose each class yourself, which means that you can do what you want!   I believe it is good!!  What’s more, since you can choose your own classes, you can change your class if you think another would be better.  I was totally surprised with this system because it is not expected in Japan!

There are various events at my school.  On the other day, there was an event where only international students were given lunch.  We got a hotdog, chocolate cake and snacks! It was delicious!  Also there is a mini concert hall at school, so I went to see a gospel or Chinese culture concert.

Though I had a problem since I came to Canada that I couldn’t use my phone for about two weeks, I have been doing well and working very hard!

皆さん、こんにちは。カナダの学校で、1年留学をしている望月るりです。 カナダは緯度が高いので夜の7時ぐらいまで明るくのですが、今の時期はもうとても寒いです。私の通っている学校はBurnaby South Secondary Schoolという学校で、バーナビー地区では少し大きい学校です。

私の学校を紹介します。ここでは、8個授業が選択して履修出来て、一日の授業数は4つです。時間割はありますが日本とは少し違います。日本だと月曜日〜土曜日までの時間割がそれぞれありますが、私の学校では曜日ごとの時間割ではなくDay1、Day2の2つしか時間割がなく、この2つの時間割を交互に受けていきます。1つの授業時間がだいたい80分ぐらいで日本より長いです。でも、授業を自分で選ぶことが出来るので自分のやりたいことが出来て良いです！ さらには、自分で授業を選ぶので、授業を1回受けて、他のがいいと思ったら授業を変えることが出来ます。これは日本では絶対ないのでびっくりしました！

私の学校ではイベントもいろいろあります。先日は、インターナショナル生だけにお昼を配ってくれるイベントがありました！ホットドッグにチョコケーキ、お菓子を無料で貰えました！美味しかったです！ 他にも私の学校にはミニコンサート場があるので、そこでゴスペルや中国楽器のコンサートを見に行ったりしました。

カナダに来てから2週間くらいスマホが使えなかったという事件もありましたが、何とか頑張っています！
