Hello, everyone! I’m Ayano Fujinaka. I’m an exchange student to study abroad for a year to Drumheller Valley Secondary School in Canada. It’s been two months since I left Japan.  I will introduce my school and Remembrance Day in Canada.

First, my school has 2 semesters, 4 classes of 80 minutes a day. Also, if there is a class that doesn’t suit you, you can talk to the teacher and change it. However, I have to take the same class every day, so it’s a little boring sometimes, but I can enjoy many events at the same time.

Also, I’m a homestay student, and I commute to and from school by school bus for about 15 minutes every day. At this time of the year, the average temperature is minus 10 degrees Celsius, so it’s very cold. It goes down to minus 20 degrees Celsius at night. At first, I was surprised at the cold I’ve never experienced, but now I’m getting used to it little by little.

Let’s move onto the next topic. November 11th was the anniversary of the end of the war in Canada. This day is called (Remembrance Day) in Canada. There was no school because it was a holiday, but there was a ceremony at school on the last day of the week. The day also means the day when we commemorate soldiers and veterans who died in wars after World War II.

In the attached photo, the red flower that many people wear on their left chest is called a poppy flower and is regarded as a symbol of Remembrance Day.

I was taking a chorus class and we presented some of the songs I practiced during the class at this ceremony. Thanks to this class, I was able to memorize English songs and learn difficult English pronunciation of words I don’t usually use. I was very nervous because I sang in front of all the students in the school, but it was good that I could sing at the precious opportunity which is only once a year.

みなさん、こんにちは。カナダのドラムヘラーに一年留学している高校一年の藤中彩乃です。私がカナダに来てもう2ヶ月が経ちました。今日は、私の通っている学校についてとカナダの終戦記念日について紹介したいと思います。

まず、私の学校についてです。この学校は二学期制で一日80分の授業を4コマ受けています。また、自分に合わないなと思う授業があったら先生と相談して変更することができます。しかし、毎日同じ授業を受けなければならないので少しつまらない時もありますが、同時にイベント事なども多く楽しんでいます。

また、私はホームステイなのですが、毎日15分ほどかけてスクールバスで登下校しています。今の時期は平均でマイナス10℃くらいが普通なのでとても寒いです。夜などひどい時はマイナス20℃まで下がります。体験したことのない寒さで最初は驚きましたが、今では少しずつ慣れてきました。

次に11月11日のカナダの終戦記念日についてです。カナダではこの日をRemembrance Day（リメンバランス・デー）と呼んでいます。当日は祝日だったので学校はありませんでしたが、その週の最後の日に学校でセレモニーがありました。また、この日は日本と同じく第一次世界大戦以降の戦争で亡くなった軍人、退役軍人らを追悼するという日です。

添付した写真の中で、多くの人が左胸につけている赤いお花はポピーの花といってRemembrance Dayのシンボルとされています。

私はコーラスの授業を受けていて、授業中に練習した歌をこのセレモニーで発表しました。この授業のおかげで英語の曲を覚えることができ、普段は使わないような単語の発音を学ぶことができました。全校生徒の前で歌ったのでとても緊張しましたが、年に一回しかない貴重な機会で歌うことができてよかったです。
