From Burnaby, Canada – Akari Funanami

I am sorry to be late to say to you all, “Happy New Year everyone!!”  I’m Akari, studying abroad at Burnaby Mountain Secondary school.  Now the year of 2020 has begun.  How did you spend New Year’s day? It wasn’t a special day for me in Canada, because Christmas is a very big event, so New Year’s Day and New Year’s Eve are smaller than Christmas. However, when I did count down with my host family, I feels like 2020 is coming.

Now, I had two events in January, so I’m going to write about them in this report.

The first topic is about Chinese New Year. My host family is Chinese Canadian, so I celebrated Chinese New Year. My host father’s mother made Chinese food. It was not like Japanese Chinese food and it was first time real Chinese food. I ate “Tang Yuan” for dessert. It tastes like sticky rice flour dumplings and its soup was sweet and delicious.

Second, I’m happy to share the story with you about Canadian snow.  It had been snowing for a week in this month and it was deep. In Vancouver, it usually doesn’t happen a lot. I have to go school early in the morning, because I have my choir class before block 1. I always go to the station by walk, so I was so hard in this day because of much snow. Especially, I was so hard from the station to school. Also, I went to a park with my friend’s after school and we tried to make snowman, but we couldn’t make it because the snow was like powder, so we couldn’t harden the snow.  Finally, we made our snowman, which did not look good, but it was cute. I was happy to experience Canadian snow.

皆さん、新年明けましておめでとうございます。バーナビーマウンテン高校に留学中の舟波明莉です。２０２０年がやってきましたね。みなさんはどんなお正月を過ごしましたか？私は特別な日ではなく、いつもと同じ日でした。なぜなら、クリスマスがとても大きなイベントで、大晦日やお正月はクリスマスに比べて小さなイベントだからです。しかし、カウントダウンをホストファミリーと一緒にした時は、２０２０年が来るという実感がわきました。さて、今月は二つの出来事があったのでそれについて話して行きたいと思います。

一つ目は、Chinese New Yearです。私のホストファミリーは中国系カナダ人なので、Chinese New Year をお祝いしました。ホストファザーのお母さんが中華料理を作ってくれました。これは、日本で食べる中華料理とは違ったので、本場の中華料理を食べるのは初めてでした。デザートには「湯圓」というものを食べました。これは日本の白玉と似ている感触でした。また、このスープは甘くて美味しかったです。

二つ目は、カナダの雪についてです。今月、一週間雪が降って、とても積もりました。例年は多く雪は降らないそうです。私は一時間目の前に、コーラスの授業があるので早く家を出なければいけません。私はいつも歩いて駅まで行っているので、この日は大変でした。特に、駅から学校までが大変でした。放課後に友達と公園に行って、雪だるまを作ろうとしたのですが、雪がパラパラすぎて固めることができませんでした。見た目は少し悪かったですが、可愛くできました。カナダの雪を体験できて、嬉しかったです。
