From New Zealand – A one-year exchange student at Sacred Heart Girls College

Hi, I am Mei Hagiwara, a one-year exchange student who goes to Sacred Heart Girls College in New Plymouth, New Zealand.  Since today is my last day of summer break, I am going to talk about what I did during the break.

I have been on summer holidays for about 9 weeks. I am so glad because in Japan, we don’t have such a long summer break. So, I could make a lot of precious memories during these holidays.

First, I will talk about the South Island tour and North Island tour.  On this tour, I met a German and we became best friends in New Zealand.  We don’t live close to each other, but we promised to meet again someday. We often keep in touch.  On the North Island tour, there were just 8 students and it was such a small tour group, so we all became good friends. I had great times on both tours. Also, I had a lot of experiences such as kayaking, riding in a helicopter, sandboarding, black water rafting, which I have never done before. I really enjoyed them. Also, I felt the brilliance of nature in New Zealand, so I love New Zealand.  I would like to live in New Zealand in the future.

The second thing is my mother and sister visited New Zealand for 6 days. I hadn’t seen them for 9 months, so I was really excited to see them. When I saw them at the airport I cried a lot. I was relieved so I realized that my family is the most important thing in my life again. I’m proud of myself a little because I had to lead my life without my family for 9 months.  But, of course, my host family have always supported me. When I was in Japan, I couldn’t decide whatever I did, so I used to rely on my mother almost everything.  But here, I am experiencing exchange life without my family, I can decide on my won. I think I have grown up in maturity. Also, I realized that my English has improved. For example, when we were at the hotel, my mother cannot speak English, so I did all things like check-in and check-out and so on. I was very happy because my mother and sister said your English has improved much. When I parted from my mother and sister, I also cried a lot. But my mother said “ you have only 3 months left. We can meet just after three months and you should make more precious memories and try to study English hard. You can do it” I felt better after what she said.

Next, we put up the tent on the backyard of my house and I slept in the tent with my host sisters and brother. In Japan, my family prefer to be indoor, so I have never set up a tent.  My host father taught me how to set up tent. We watched movies and talk a lot at nights. My host father told me that a lot of Kiwis sleep in the tent during summer holidays. I have experienced Kiwi style summer holidays!  I really enjoyed it so much that I wanted to sleep in there more days. If I have the opportunity to sleep in the tent again I would like to try to set up tent and sleep in there with my family in Japan!

Finally, my host mother said the best thing to me ever about my New Zealand life.  Last week, one of my close friends came to New Plymouth from Otsuma Nakano, so I went to the airport to see her with my host mother and host father. On the way to the airport, they said, “She won’t recognize who you are because you have changed a lot and you are like Kiwi now” Also, my host mother praised me and she said to me like “We have accepted a lot of students before, but I haven’t met one like you who has changed so much in comparison with my first day of exchange life. This is the best thing ever in my New Zealand life, because I am studying abroad because I would like to change.

I cannot believe that I have just less than 3 months. Time has gone by fast. I will try my best and try many new things with the rest of the three months left!

みなさんこんにちは！セイクリッドハートガールズカレッジに一年留学中の萩原萌衣です！今日は夏休み最後の日なので、こらからわたしの夏休みについて話そうと思います。わたしは９週間ほどの休みを過ごしました。わたしは日本にはこのような長い休みがないのでこのことについて、とてもうれしく思います。だから、とても大切な思い出をたくさん作ることができました。

まず最初は、サウスアイランドツアーとノースアイランドツアーについてです。サウスアイランドツアーでは親友と言えるぐらいのドイツ人の友達ができました。私たちはお互い近くに住んでいませんが、いつか絶対会うと約束しました。今でもほぼ毎日連絡を取り合っています。ノースアイランドツアーは生徒が8人しかいなく小さなグループだったので、みんなととても良い友達になれました。わたしは両方のツアーを楽しみました。また、カヤッキング、ヘリコプター遊覧、サンドボーディグ、ブラックウォーターラフティングなど、初めての経験をたくさんしました。このツアーで改めてニュージーランドの自然の素晴らしさを感じました。この体験で、ますますニュージーランドが好きになり、将来ニュージーランドに住みたいです！

２つ目は、わたしの母と姉がニュージーランドに来たことについてです。9ヶ月ぐらい会えてなかったので、会えるのをとても楽しみにしていました。空港で母と姉を見た時は、嬉しすぎて号泣しました。ほっとして安心したので、やっぱり家族はわたしの中で一番大切なものだと改めて気づきました。わたしは自分のことを少し誇りに思います。なぜなら9ヶ月間家族がいないところで生活を送ってきたからです。でももちろん、ずっとホストファミリーがわたしのことをいつも支えてくれています。わたしが日本にいたころは自分の意見で物事を決めることができなくて、母にすべて頼っていました。でも、ニュージーランドで家族がいない下で生活してみて、自分の意見をしっかり持って物事を決めれるようになりました。そのことについて少し成長できたかなと思います。また、英語力も上達したなと改めて実感しました、例えば、ホテルにいた時、母は英語があまり話せないので、わたしが全部チェックイン、チェックアウトなどを済ませました。母と姉が、「英語力がアップしたね」と言ってくれてとてもうれしかったです。わたしは彼らと別れる時、また泣いてしまいました。しかし、母が、あと3ヶ月経ったら会えるし、あなたは貴重な思い出を作って、英語の勉強も3ヶ月間頑張るべきだよ。あなたならできるよ、と言ってくれました。わたしはその言葉で元気をもらいました。

次は、わたしたちは夏休みの間、家のバックヤードにテントをセットして、ホストシスターとブラザーと一緒に寝ました。日本では、わたしの家族はインドアを好むので、テントをセットしたことは、今までありませんでした。ホストファザーがどのようにテントをセットするか教えてくれました。わたしたちは夜にテントで映画を見たり、たくさん話しました。ホストファザーが多くのキウイの家族はこのように夏休みはテントで寝るんだよと言っていました。わたしはキウイスタイルの夏休みを過ごすことができました！わたしはもっとテントで寝たかったぐらい、楽しみました！もし日本でテントをセットする機会があったら、自分で組み立ててみて、家族と一緒にテントで寝てみたいです！!

最後は、ホストマザーがわたしに言ったニュージーランドライフの今までで1番嬉しかったことです。先週わたしの仲の良い友達が大妻中野からニュージーランドに来たので、彼女を空港まで、ホストマザーとファザーと迎えに行きました。空港に行く途中、ホストマザーとファザーが、「彼女はわたしのことに気づかないかもね。だってあなたは、キウイの子みたいにすごい変わったじゃん」と言われました。また、ホストマザーは、「たくさんの留学生を受け入れてきたけど、あなたみたにこんなに留学初日と比べて、変われた子は見たことなかったよ。あなたが初めてよ。」と言ってとても褒めてくれました。わたしは今までで1番ほんとうに嬉しかったです。なぜならわたしは自分自身を変えたくて留学をしてるからです。

わたしは残り3ヶ月も少ない時間しかないことをほんとうに信じられません。時間が進むのが早すぎます。残されたおよそ3ヶ月の留学生活を、もっとたくさん思い出を作って、ベストを尽くそうと思います！
