From Australia, Report from Momoyo K. at St Andrew’s Catholic College 021520

Hello, everyone! I am Momoyo Kawano, an exchange student studying at St. Andrew’s Catholic college in Australia.

It is now in the middle of summer season in Australia, so everyday has been very hot . When I come home from school, the temperature is over 40 degrees. I feel much hotter than summer season in Japan.

Recently, the school allowed us for few days to wear gym clothes instead of wearing school uniform, because it had been very hot. And we usual have lunch outside of classrooms, but these days we could have lunch inside.

This weekend, we got a power outage.  It went on for an hour.  We felt very hot, so we couldn’t stay home and went to drive to a mountain.

Another day, we were very happy to congratulate my host grand mother’s birthday! In Australia, people have Pavlova for celebrating birthday, which is not cake but looks like a birthday cake. The base is made of egg white, and then it’s covered with whipped cream, blueberry ,strawberry and kiwi on the base. This picture is “pavlova”.  My host grandmother’s Initials is N, so the shape of its pavlova is N.

Last weekend, we went to butterfly farm in Kuranda. The farm was on the mountain and there was a huge greenhouse with glass slides. We stayed in the greenhouse under direct sunlight and without air conditioners, so it was too hot. Everyone there in the farm looked very tired because of its heat. But many butterflies were very beautiful. The farm has lots of butterflies which flied variously.  One of the staff there explained to us about butterflies. She told us “Butterfly sometimes comes to your hand”. And then a butterfly was on my host mother’s shoulder. And we saw butterfly eggs and larvae in there. It was very interesting and fun to see the whole butterfly growth process.

みなさん、こんにちは！オーストラリアのセントアンドリュースカトリックカレッジに留学中の川野桃代です。

オーストラリアは現在、夏でとても暑いです。学校の下校時間は体感気温が40度を超えるなど、日本の夏よりも暑いです。そのため、特に暑い数日間は体育着での登校が許可されていました。また、普段はランチを教室の外で食べなければいけないのですが、その数日間は教室が開放され快適な教室でランチを食べられました。

この間の週末にその暑い中で停電が起きました。エアコンのつかない部屋はとても暑いかったです。停電は約１時間ほどで終わりましたが、家の中にはいられないので、ホストファミリーと一緒にドライブに出かけました。

そして、別の日にはホストマザーのお母さんのお誕生日をお祝いしました。オーストラリアではお誕生日の時にケーキとは別にパブロバという卵白でできたとても甘いものを食べます。ケーキではありませんが見た目はケーキに近いです。卵白でできた生地に生クリームをのせその上にブルーベリー、キウイ、イチゴをのせます。これがそのパブロバです。頭文字がNなので、Nの形をしています。

また、先週末は蝶を見に行きました。山の上にあって、大きなガラス張りの建物の中に蝶々がいます。直射日光の中、冷房もないため見にきてた人はみんな暑くて疲れてそうでした。しかし、蝶々はとても綺麗でたくさんいました。複数の種類がいたのでスタッフの方が一つ一つ説明してくださいました。スタッフの方が「たまに蝶が手にとまる」と教えてくださいました。するとホストマザーの肩の上に蝶がとまっていました。さらにその場所では蝶だけではなく、卵や幼虫も見れます。蝶の成長過程が全部見れるのはとても興味深くて楽しかったです。
