From New Zealand, Report from Rinako U. at New Plymouth Girls’ High School 021520

Hello everyone! I’m Rinako Uesaka, an exchange student at New Plymouth Girl’s High School, in New Plymouth, New Zealand. In my report, I would like to talk about the swimming competition on Wednesday, February 12.

In the swim competition, all of the school students competed with each other for the points to get in teams of four colors, red, yellow, blue and green. Each color is unique to New Zealand and is called Aotea, Tokumaru, Kurahapo, Tainui in the order of red, yellow, blue, and green. These are the names of the canoes that Maori used when they arrived in New Zealand. In addition to crawl and backstroke events, there were also events that used kickboards unique to the country where surfing was popular.

During the swimming competition, cheerful music was played, and people sang and danced. I had my friends around to teach dancing. I enjoyed dancing with my friends.

Aotea, to which I belong, was able to take first place in the results of the swimming competition. I participated in the swimming competition as a cheer and I am very happy to have made some great memories in New Zealand.

I experienced a swimming competition in New Zealand and found some things in common with Japan. One of them is to support people who are participating in the competition with full power. Aotea, to which I belong, was able to take first place in the results of the swimming competition. There will be various events in the future, so I would like to make many discoveries through them.

みなさん、こんにちは！私は、ニュージーランドのニュープリマスにあるニュープリマス・ガールズ・ハイスクールに留学中の上阪莉奈子です。私のレポートでは、2月12日水曜日の水泳大会についてお話したいと思います。

水泳大会では、この学校のすべての生徒が赤、黄、青、緑の4色のチームでポイントを競います。それぞれの色はニュージーランド特有で、赤、黄、青、緑の順にAotea、Tokumaru、Kurahapo、Tainuiと呼ばれています。これらは、マオリがニュージーランドに到着したカヌーの名前です。種目はクロールや背泳ぎのイベントに加えて、サーフィンが人気のある国特有のビートバンを使用したイベントもありました。水泳大会中は、陽気な音楽がながされ、人々は歌ったり踊ったりしました。私は周りの友達にダンスを教えてもらいました。友達と一緒に踊れて楽しかったです。私が所属するAoteaは、水泳大会の結果で一位を取ることができました。私は水泳大会に応援として参加し、ニュージーランドで素晴らしい思い出をつくることができてとても幸せです。

私はニュージーランドで水泳大会を経験し、日本との共通点をいくつか見つけました。そのうちの一つは、競技に参加している人々を全力で応援することです。
