From Australia, Report from Minori S. at St. Andrew’s Catholic College  0225.2020

Hello, everyone! This is my second report from St Andrew’s Catholic College in Australia, where I am studying.　I’d like to talk about my reading class, and my weekend in this report.

First, I have reading class in Friday. In this class, students read books that they want to read. My reading class takes place in this school’s library. I like this library, because there are ingenuities for all of us to enjoy reading. For example, there are levels to classify books into categories such as adventure, friendship, which makes it easy for students to access books they want to read.  Students can also understand topics of books they see quickly. Especially, I like the bookshelf with some photos and pictures. This shelf picks up and recommends some books to library visitors.

The current topic of this shelf in the library is Valentine. I was surprised at that students read their own book in class when I joined this read class first, because I thought other subjects, like math, would be more useful for our age students than reading. However, after I learned benefits of reading, I became to like reading because it made me feel calm and quiet.  Of course, reading books is really helpful for me to improve my vocabulary levels. I thought this class was very important. Also, I noticed I didn’t have enough time to read books in Japan, so I’d like to cherish this time.

Secondly, I went to my host sister’s friend’s house with my host family on February 16. The house had a pool, so I played there with children. The children were younger than me, but they taught me how to play kindly, and treated me like a friend. After that, I went to the beach, and enjoyed having dinner. It was a very nice view. Before I went to the beach, I asked my host mother if children could swim in the sea. She said “No, because there are crocodiles in the sea. In Japan, it is normal that people see crocodiles in the zoo. However, crocodiles are wild in Australia.”  Actually, I have heard information that someone sometimes see crocodiles from media  news.  Although I was surprised to know that, I realized that people in Australia are living with authentic great nature.

みなさんこんにちは！これは私の2度目の私が留学しているオーストラリア、セントアンドリュースからのレポートです。このレポートでは私のreadの授業と、私の週末について話したいと思います。

私のreadの授業は金曜日にあります。この授業では、生徒たちは自分の読みたい本を読みます。私のreadクラスはこの学校の図書室で行われます。この図書室には読書を楽しむための工夫があるので、私はこの図書室が好きです。例えば、冒険や友情といったカテゴリーに本を分類するラベルがあります。生徒たちは本の話題をすぐに理解できるので、お気に入りの話を見つけるのが簡単になります。特に、私はこの写真の棚が好きです。この棚はいくつかの本を取り上げて勧めてくれます。この写真の棚のトピックはバレンタインです。私は最初のこの授業で、授業の中で本を読むということに驚きました。なぜなら、読書よりも数学のような、他の教科の方が私たちの年齢の学生には役に立つと思ったからです。しかし、最初のこの授業で読書が気持ちを落ち着かせたり、多くの単語を与えてくれるといった利点を学んだ後、この授業は大切だと思いました。また、日本では本を読む時間を十分にとれていなかったことに気付いたので、この時間を大事にしたいと思います。

2月16日にホストファミリーとホストシスターの友達のお家に行きました。その子のお家にはプールがあるので私は子どもたちとそこで遊びました。子どもたちはみんな年下ですが、私に優しく遊び方を教えてくれたり、友達のように私と接してくれました。その後、私はビーチに行って夕食を食べました。そこは、とても良い眺めでした。ビーチに行く前、私はホストマザーに子どもたちは海で泳ぐのかどうか聞きました。彼女は海にはワニがいるから泳がないと言いました。日本では、私たちはワニを動物園で見ます。しかし、ここではワニは野生で生息しています。ワニを見たという情報はよくニュースになるそうです。私は驚くと同時に自然と共に暮らしていることを感じました。
