Happy New Year to You All!   It’s great to share the new reports from the exchange students of Otsuma Nakano studying in Ireland  and Canada.  –  新年、おめでとうございます。2022年から2023年への年越。今年も多くの大妻中野生が留学先の国でホストファミリーと一緒に新年を祝っています。年末から年始の留学レポートです。

From Bray in Ireland,

Hi everyone!   My name is K.H.  I have been staying in Ireland  for 4 months. The year 2022 is already ending, although it has gone by really fast.   In this report, I’ll talk about three things that happened this month.

The first is about Christmas exam. It was on December 5th and 6th. The subjects were only English, French and Math. Although they were not so difficult. In English test, I wrote 2 essays about Taliban and Afghanistan. I had to write fairly long sentences, but I have practiced a lot in Japan. So, I was able to finish to write it and the score wasn’t bad. In the French test, I needed to use English to Japanese and French to English dictionaries. My test was easier than other girls, but it’s still hard for me. On the other hand, I was able to learn vocabularies and grammars, so that was really good opportunity to practice French. In the Math test, I studied text, so that was easy. But there were a lot of complicated calculation problems, so it was difficult to allocate the time. Even so, French and Math score were good also, so I’m satisfied for these results. Next exam is in May, so I’ll do my best.

Next is about snow. In the middle of this month, we had snow! I live in very near the sea, so I could see the beach and snow. It was beautiful and a bit curious. I went to Bray Head and the I saw that the distant mountains are covered by snow a little bit. That was very beautiful. However, the day after snowfall, the road was iced so it was very easy to slip, and weather was really cold. It was not good, but I was happy that I saw snow. I hope the snow will stick next time. My Swiss host sister loves snow, so she looks really happy as well.

Third is about Christmas.   In Ireland here, the Christmas is the bigger event than Japan, I think. There were a lot of lights in the town and houses. They were so beautiful. I did gift exchange with my host family in Christmas Eve and that was so fun! I got a lot of nice gifts and also, I was really glad at they were happy with the gift I gave them. In the Christmas day, we ate Irish lunch and dinner together, they were delicious. After that we watched movie, it’s called “Die Hard.” That was so fun! I want to watch movies again with my host family.

This month, I was able to spend a lot of time with my host family, so I’m happy. I hope to get to know them better in the future.  Thank you for reading. See you next month!

皆さんこんにちは！  1年留学でアイルランドのブレイに滞在しているK.Hです。今は、4ヶ月目。　本当にあっという間なもので、2022年も終わりが近づいてきました。今回も今月にあった3つのことについてお話していきたいと思います。

一つ目は、テストについてです。12月の5日と6日に行われ、教科は英語、フランス語、数学のみでした。全体を通してそんなに難しくはなかったです。英語のテストでは、アフガニスタンとタリバンについて２つのエッセイを書きました。結構長い文章を書く必要があったので大変でしたが、日本で練習はしていたので何とか書き終えることが出来ました。得点も悪くはなかったです。フランス語のテストでは、英語から日本語と、フランス語から英語の２つの辞書を使う必要がありました。私のテストは他の生徒よりは簡単でしたが、それでも私にとってはとても難しかったです。一方で、語彙や文法を沢山学べたので、フランス語を練習するとても良い機会になりました。数学のテストでは、教科書を勉強して臨んだので、簡単でした。しかし、複雑な計算が沢山出てきたので、時間配分をするのが難しかったです。フランス語と数学も良い点数だったので今回のテストの結果には満足しています。次のテストは5月にあるのでその時も自分のベストを尽くしたいと思います。

次は雪についてです。今月中旬にアイルランドでも雪が降りました！私は海の近くに住んでいるので、雪とビーチを同時に見ることが出来ました。それはとても綺麗で、少し不思議な感じもしました。私はこの日、ブレイヘッドに行って、そこから少し遠くの山に雪が積もっているのも見ることが出来ました。しかしながら、翌日からの数日は道が凍ってしまい、とても滑りやすくさらに、とても気温が低かったです。これはあまり快適ではありませんでしたが、雪を見ることが出来たのでとても良かったです。次は雪がもっと積もってくれたら嬉しいです。私のスイスから来たホストシスターも雪が見られてとても楽しそうでした。

3つ目はクリスマスについてです。ここではクリスマスは日本より大きなイベントだと思います。沢山のイルミネーションを街や家で見ることが出来、それらはとても綺麗でした。　クリスマスイブにはホストファミリーとプレゼント交換をしました。私は沢山の素敵なプレゼントをもらえたのと同時に、私があげたプレゼントもとても喜んでもらえたのでとても良かったです。クリスマス当日にはホストファミリーとアイルランドの昼食と夕食を食べました。とても美味しかったです。その後にはみんなで「ダイ・ハード」という映画を見ました。またホストファミリーと一緒に映画を見たいなと思います。

今月は沢山の時間をホストファミリーと過ごすことが出来たのでとても嬉しかったです。これからももっと仲良くなっていけたらいいと思います。ご清覧ありがとうございました。また来月お会いしましょう！

From Burnaby, Canada,  December Report –

Hi everyone!! My name is S.H and I have been studying in Burnaby, Canada for four months now.　The year 2022 is coming to an end. By the time you are reading this repot, it will already be 2023. Happy New Year!! What kind of year was 2022 for you? I think it was a turning point in my life, as I became a high school student and studied abroad in Canada. Looking back on the year 2022, I will show you my last report for this year.

First of all, I would like to talk about events at my school. This month I had benefit concert. There were performances by students in the dance company, traditional dances from their home country, and a band formed by the students. Another was a Christmas party organized by the Leo club to which I belong. The Canadian students took the lead in bringing in food, and we all had a dinner. Afterwards, they played loud music and everyone sang and danced, it was like a club. I thought it would never be able to do that in a Japanese school…lol  Also, one day before Christmas break is called Pajama Day, and I had free pancakes and hot cocoa in the morning, so I woke up a little early and enjoyed it at school with my friends.

December is a month of Christmas. In the Canadian city of Vancouver, a Christmas market is held every year. It was a wonderful place with elaborate decorations and a merry go round. Also main dishes are made in German. There are many skate rink in Canada, and I went many times because it costs only 5 dollars per person. It is very cold, both indoors and outdoors, so you need to be warm. There was also one week when it was incredibly cold. It was at least minus 11 degrees Celsius, and it felt warm when the temperature was 0 degrees Celsius, which is something you don’t normally experiences. Do you know the Nutcracker? It is one of the most famous ballet pieces. I love ballet, so I went to a Christmas performance by a ballet company near my house. It was a good experience for me because I don’t get to see it very often.

Lastly, I would like to talk about the exchange with my friends and host family. While we were eating mother’s special dishes, father came as Santa to deliver presents. I received a Champion hoodie. My friends and I had a home party. We ate a lot of cakes and snacks and watched movies together. I was also able to go to many cafes. I had high tea at a famous tea shop and ate lovely pancakes. I am glad that I could go to eat many Japanese foods such as hot pot and Maze-soba, but my desire to eat in japan will never disappear.

It is a new year, and the school is moving on to the next semester, and classes are changing. In the limited time of about six months left, the outcome will depend on how I act, so I am determined to do my best. I am going to do my best to keep my mind tight. I will try to keep my mind tight and do my best and to give you all a nice report again.

2022年も終わりを迎えようとしていますね。みなさんがこのレポートを目にしている時は既に2023年になっていることかと思います。明けましておめでとうございます！みなさんにとって2022年はどんな年でしたか？私は高校生になり，カナダに留学をするなど自分の人生において大きな分岐点になる年だったと思います。2022年を振り返りながら私の今年最後のレポートをお見せします。

まずは学校でのイベントです。定期的に私の学校ではイベントがありますが，今月はベネフィットコンサートがありました。ダンスカンパニーに入っている生徒が披露したり，母国の伝統ダンスや生徒が組んだバンドの演奏もありとても豪華でした。そしてもう一つは私の所属するレオクラブが企画したクリスマスパーティーです。カナディアンの生徒が中心になってご飯を持ち寄り，みんなでディナー会をしました。その後には音楽を爆音でかけながらみんなで歌ったり踊ったりし，まるでクラブのような空間でした。絶対日本の学校ではできません笑　またクリスマスブレイクに入る1日前はパジャマデイトいい、朝にフリーパンケーキとホットココアがあったので少し早起きをして学校に行き友達と楽しみました。

12月といえばクリスマスですよね。カナダのバンクーバーという都市にはクリスマスマーケットが毎年開催されます。ドイツの料理が中心に売られていて、装飾が凝られていたりメリーゴーランドがあって素敵な所でした。カナダには多くのスケートリンクがあります。1人5ドル（500円くらい）ほどでできるので何回も行きました。屋外・室内関係なくとても寒いので防寒必須です。またある1週間だけとてつもなく寒い週間がありました。最低マイナス11度まで下がり、0度あれば暖かく感じるなど普段ではあり得ない感覚になったのも一つの思い出です。みなさんはくるみ割り人形を知っていますか？バレエの有名な作品の一つです。私はバレエが好きなので私の家から近くにあるバレエ団のクリスマス公演に行きました。なかなか見れていないのでいい経験でした。

最後に友人やホストファミリーとの交流についてです。25日の夜にはホストファミリーとクリスマスディナーでした。マザーの特製料理を食べていつ途中にファザーがサンタになってプレゼントを届けに来てくれました。私はチャンピョンのフーディーをーもらいました。友人とはホームパーティーをしました。ケーキやお菓子をたくさん食べて一緒に映画を見たりするなど、ずっとカナダでやりたかったことができて嬉しかったです。またカフェにもたくさん行くことができました。有名な紅茶屋さんのハイティーや可愛いパンケーキを食べれてしあわせな冬休みでした。お鍋やまぜそばの日本食もたくさん食べに行けたのでよかったですが、日本で食事をしたいという願望は消えてません。

新しい年になり、学校では次のセメスターに進んで授業も変わります。残り半年という限られた時間の中で、自分がどのように行動するかで結果は変わってくるので気を引き締めて頑張ろうと思います。またみなさんに素敵なレポートをお見せできるようにもしますね。
